In order to explore the feasibility of using quantum dots (QDs) as nanodiagnostic tools in cells under oxidative stress, the interaction of cysteine-functionalized CdTe QDs with peroxynitrite (PN), a powerful biological oxidant, was spectroscopically investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) of CdTe QDs was quenched to the extent of 85% at 86 microM concentration of peroxynitrite. In contrast, the loss of PL intensity was merely 7% for CdS QDs under identical conditions. The quenching pattern shows a positive deviation from Stern-Volmer equation, but obeys the Perrin equation for static quenching. The Perrin quenching constants increased with decreasing temperature. Size dependence was also prominently observed as quenching efficiency increased by 70% on moving from 4.0 nm sized CdTe QDs to 2.8 nm ones. Interestingly, the QDs exhibited a time-dependent auto-recovery of photoluminescence. At 25 and 15 degrees C, the recovery time was found to be 1.25 and 3.5 h, respectively, however, the extent of recovery remained nearly the same, about 22%. Peroxynitrite followed a first order decay kinetics with a half-life of 45.6 min, which got substantially reduced to 2.9 min in the presence of CdTe QDs. The over-all mechanism of the interaction has been explained as a two-pronged attack of peroxynitrite on (i) the cysteine-capping layer and (ii) the CdTe core, resulting in a reversible and irreversible loss of QD-photoluminescence.

Compared to single-mode detection, dual-mode sensing strategies have garnered increasing attention from researchers due to their superior detection accuracy and reliability. Exosomes, as non-invasive biomarkers, hold significant potential for disease diagnosis. However, sensitive and precise detection of exosomes still presents considerable technical challenges.

The flexible surface and chemical compatibility of hydrogels render them particularly appealing for research and development in antibacterial materials. However, designing tough hydrogels with multiple antibacterial mechanisms simultaneously remains a challenge. Inspired by the human skin, a hydrogel with bacterial antifouling, detection, and inactivation functions has been prepared using zwitterionic [2-(methylacrylyl) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-propyl sulfonate) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) as the matrix and cadmium telluride quantum dots functionalised with cysteamine (CA-CdTe QDs) as the filler through micelle copolymerisation technology, achieving the integration of multiple antimicrobial mechanisms.

This work reports the investigation of telluride cadmium quantum dots (CdTe QDs) conjugated to plant lectins from (SteLL) and (PgTeL) for acute toxicity and genotoxicity in healthy mice and 24-h biodistribution in sarcoma 180-bearing animals. Acute toxicity data indicated their safety, despite some histopathological alterations. Comet assay revealed that the QDs-PgTeL group presented a higher damage index and frequency of damage than the negative control.

Superoxide anion (O) is a highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) within tumor cells, and its abnormal concentrations can lead to various diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and premature aging disorders. Here, we obtained a series of bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) systems that can be used for sensitive and specific detection of O by varying the type and reaction time of quantum dots (QDs) and combining them with different concentrations of recombinant aequorin. Among them, the recombinant aequorin-conjugated CdTe/CdSe QDs had the highest conjugation efficiency as the Aeq-QD BRET sensor, which has a remarkable energy transfer efficiency of 35.

This paper aimed to investigate the role of surface modification on the potential interaction between CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and ABC transporters in doxorubicin-resistant lung cancer (A549/DOX) cells. For this purpose, CdTe QDs modified with -glutathione (GSH), -carboxy (COOH), and -amino (NH) were applied, with the former two QDs exhibiting negative potentials and the latter ones being positive. All the three QDs reduced cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, with NH-CdTe QDs being more toxic.
