Background: Gastric acid secretion is subject to complex control mechanisms, and varies widely between individuals and populations. Its measurement has previously required intubation of the stomach with ingestion of a test meal or injection of a secretion stimulant.
Aim: We describe a novel method of measuring gastric acid secretion noninvasively - the Calcium Carbonate Breath Test.
Methods: 13C-labelled calcium carbonate is ingested by a fasting participant. The carbonate neutralizes gastric acid to produce 13CO2, which is expired in the breath. Measurement of the excess 13CO2 in the breath allows back-calculation of the amount of gastric acid secreted during the test, provided that other variables affecting CO2 production and excretion are minimized or controlled for.
Results: Studies on a single healthy individual have shown reproducible estimations of acid secretion and over 80% suppression of acid secretion after the proton pump inhibitor treatment.
Conclusion: The method seems to be promising, but further studies on other individuals need to be carried out. The Calcium Carbonate Breath Test may have wide applications in epidemiological studies, clinical management of acid-related diseases, screening for hypochlorhydria and development of new acid-suppressing treatments.

Background: YYD601 is a new dual delayed-release formulation of esomeprazole, developed to enhance plasma exposure and prolong the duration of acid suppression.
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetic (PK), and pharmacodynamic (PD) profiles of YYD601 20 mg following single and multiple oral administrations in healthy, fasting adult Koreans, and to compare these outcomes to those of the conventional esomeprazole 20 mg capsule.
Methods: A randomized, open-label, two-period crossover study was conducted in 28 participants, who were divided into two treatment groups: one group received YYD601 20 mg, and the other received conventional esomeprazole 20 mg, once daily for five consecutive days.

Gastric antral vascular ectasia is a frequent and potentially severe complication of systemic sclerosis. Management is presently limited to supportive care, acid suppression and endoscopic treatment. Many cases of gastric antral vascular ectasia tend to be refractory or partially responsive to standard treatment and require multiple endoscopic procedures to control the recurrent bleeding.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), metabolized by cytochrome P450 (P450) enzymes, are widely used to inhibit gastric acid secretion. This study investigated CYP116B46, a self-sufficient monooxygenase with a reductase domain, to elucidate its interaction with ilaprazole, a PPI. Binding assays and docking simulations indicate that CYP116B46 serves as a suitable model for studying PPI metabolism.

Background: Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a precursor to gastric cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite current therapeutic strategies, preventing the transition from gastritis to cancer remains a challenge. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly the Yiqi-Huayu-Jiedu (YQHYJD) formula, have exhibited promising results in CAG management.

Pickering emulsion stabilized by food grade nanoparticles with stimulus response as a targeted delivery system for lipophilic bioactive compounds has attracted people's attention. In this study, ferulic acid was used to modify saccharified zein to prepare pH-sensitive nanoparticles for stabilizing Pickering emulsion. The structure, interface behavior, stability of Pickering emulsion and gastrointestinal digestion characteristics of nanoparticles in vitro were studied.
