Objective: To investigate the CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) system in women with pre-eclampsia.

Methods: Expression of CD40 on monocytes and expression of CD40 and CD40L on platelets were determined by whole blood flow cytometry in 23 women with pre-eclampsia and in 23 normotensive pregnant women. Serum levels of soluble CD40L in both groups of women were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Results: There was a significantly higher expression of CD40 and CD40L on platelets and CD40 on monocytes in the women with pre-eclampsia compared with normotensive pregnant women (P<0.001 for all comparisons). The serum concentration of soluble CD40L was significantly higher in women with pre-eclampsia compared with normotensive pregnant women (P=0.012).

Conclusion: Pre-eclampsia is associated with activation of the CD40-CD40L system. The activation of this system may contribute to the development or maintenance of the proinflammatory and prothrombotic responses, increased cytokine production, and endothelial cell dysfunction found in pre-eclampsia.

Background: Alarmin cytokine IL-25 promotes type 2 inflammatory responses in disorders such as asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and known targets include ILC2 and Th2 cells. However, other cellular targets for IL-25 remain poorly defined.

Objective: To investigate induction and expression of IL-25 receptor (IL-17RB) by B cells and evaluate responsiveness of IL-17RB-expressing B cells to IL-25 in vitro.

Cognitive dysfunction has become the second leading cause of death among the diabetic patients. In pre-diabetic stage, blood-brain barrier (BBB) injury occurs and induced the microvascular complications of diabetes, especially, diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD). Endothelial cells are the major component of BBB, on which the increased expression of CD40 could mediate BBB dysfunction in diabetics.

Previous research on cadmium (Cd) focused on toxicity, neglecting hormesis and its mechanisms. In this study, pakchoi seedlings exposed to varying soil Cd concentrations (CK, 5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg) showed an inverted U-shaped growth trend (hormesis characteristics): As Cd concentration increases, biomass exhibited hormesis character (Cd5) and then disappear (Cd40). ROS levels rose in both Cd treatments, with Cd5 being intermediate between CK and Cd40.

T cells expressing the γδ T-cell receptor (TCR) represent a numerically small proportion of total T cells. Unlike αβ T cells they are activated by non-peptide antigens independently of MHC-presentation. γδ T cells have been recognized as a favorable prognostic marker across different tumor entities.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in the placenta can lead to fetal distress and demise, characterized by severe trophoblast necrosis, chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI), and massive perivillous fibrin deposition. We aimed to uncover spatial immune-related protein changes in SARS-CoV-2 placentitis compared with CHI placentas and uncomplicated pregnancies to gain insight into the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Placentas were retrospectively collected from cases with SARS-CoV-2 placentitis resulting in fetal distress/demise (n = 9), CHI (n = 9), and uncomplicated term controls (n = 9).
