Coal mining in India, especially open-cast mining, substantially strengthens the economy while concurrently causing environmental deterioration, such as soil pollution with toxic chemicals and heavy metals. This study sought to examine the efficacy of vermicompost as a remediation technique for Mine Tailing Soil (MTS) in the Ledo Coal Fields. During a 120-day duration, different concentrations of vermicompost (20%, 30%, and 40%) were administered to MTS, and the impacts on soil physicochemical parameters, fertility, and plant growth were evaluated.

Development of a model for detection and analysis of inclusions in tomographic images of iron castings using decision trees.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Applied Computer Science and Modelling Department, Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science, AGH University of Krakow, Czarnowiejska 66, 30-054, Krakow, Poland.

CT images of castings made of ductile iron were analyzed in the paper. On these images, objects can be identified that can be considered as graphite precipitates or indicate the presence of a defect in the casting. Research conducted in this area is described, based on experimental data that allows to determine whether the indicated components present in the casting are graphite precipitation.

Effect of Temperature and Stress on Creep Behavior of (TiB + TiC + YO)/α-Ti Composite.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

National Key Laboratory for Precision Hot Processing of Metals, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China.

In this study, a (TiB + TiC + YO)/α-Ti composite was prepared by induction skull melting to investigate its creep behavior and microstructure evolution under different temperatures and stresses. The results show that the microstructure of the composite in the as-cast state is a basket-weave structure, and the main phase composition is α lamella, containing a small amount of β phase and equiaxed α phase. The creep life of the composite decreases significantly when the temperature is increased from 650 °C to 700 °C, and the steady-state creep rate is increased by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude.

High-Strength Ultrafine-Grained Al-Mg-Si Alloys Exposed to Mechanical Alloying and Press-Forming: A Comparison with Cast Alloys.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Shandong Laboratory of Advanced Materials and Green Manufacturing at Yantai, Yantai 264006, China.

A high-strength Al-Mg-Si alloy was prepared using mechanical alloying (MA) combined with press-forming (PF) technology, achieving a strength of up to 715 MPa and a hardness of 173 HB. The microstructures were comparatively analyzed with conventional cast Al-Mg-Si alloys using XRD, TKD, and TEM. The XRD results showed that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the alloy prepared by MA+PF was significantly broadened and accompanied by a shift in the diffraction peak.
