A comparative study of the usual static mercury drop electrode (SMDE) and the bismuth film electrode (BiFE) as applied to the analysis of metal complexation by thiol-rich peptides is done. Preliminary experiments on BiFE by differential pulse voltammetry showed that Cd(II) and Pb(II)-ions behave in a similar way as using stripping voltammetry and stripping chronopotentiometry with regard to some splitting effects of the signals. Additionally, on BiFE glutathione (GSH) and some phytochelatins (PC(n)) produce quite irregular signals related to the anodic oxidation of bismuth, which restricted the studies to a narrower concentration range than on SMDE. In the presence of both metal ion and peptide the same characteristic signals were observed on BiFE and SMDE, but better resolution was achieved in the first one, allowing a qualitative analysis of the complexation process for the Pb-GSH system which was not possible on SMDE. This suggests that BiFE may be a complementary tool to Hg electrodes, if not a valuable alternative, in the study of metal complexation.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking of a topological insulator phase generates zero-field edge modes which are the hallmark of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and of possible value for dissipation-free switching or non-reciprocal microwave devices. But present material systems exhibiting the QAHE, such as magnetically doped bismuth telluride and twisted bilayer graphene, are intrinsically unstable, limiting their scalability. A pristine magnetic oxide at the surface of a TI would leave the TI structure intact and stabilize the TI surface, but epitaxy of an oxide on the lower-melting-point chalcogenide presents a particular challenge.

Relaxor ferroelectric film capacitors exhibit high power density with ultra-fast charge and discharge rates, making them highly advantageous for consumer electronics and advanced pulse power supplies. The Aurivillius-phase bismuth layered ferroelectric films can effectively achieve a high breakdown electric field due to their unique insulating layer ((BiO) layer)). However, designing and fabricating Aurivillius-phase bismuth layer relaxor ferroelectric films with optimal energy storage characteristics is challenging due to their inherently stable ferroelectric properties.

Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (pMUTs), especially those using lead-free materials, are crucial next-generation microdevices for precise actuation and sensing, driving advancements in medical, industrial, and environmental applications. Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) is emerging as a promising lead-free piezoelectric material to replace Pb(Zr,Ti)O in pMUTs. Despite its potential, the integration of BiFeO thin films into pMUTs has been hindered by poling issues.

In this study, the stability of CrO, ZrO, and MnO oxide films in high-temperature liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) was systematically investigated using both experimental and first principles calculation methods. The research findings indicated that CrO demonstrated superior structural integrity at corrosion temperatures of both 600 °C and 700 °C and displayed exceptional resistance to LBE corrosion. ZrO demonstrates resistance to LBE infiltration.
