Introduction: Post-operative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are a significant cause of morbidity following surgery. This study evaluated the effect of intraoperative positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on PPCs in overweight patients undergoing elective laparoscopic hernia surgery.
Patients And Methods: In this randomised controlled trial, 60 patients with a body mass index between 25 and 30 kg/m² were divided equally into a standard PEEP group (5 cm H2O) and a high PEEP group (10 cm H2O).

Background: High-frequency, high-intensity transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (HFHI TENS, i.e. 80 Hz and 40-60 mA) is an effective, fast-acting pain relief modality after elective surgery, offering pain relief within 5 min.

We present a case of a woman in her 70s who arrived in the emergency department with signs of small-bowel obstruction. CT scanning revealed acute cholecystitis with a cholecystoduodenal fistula, pneumobilia and small-bowel obstruction possibly secondary to gallstone ileus although no radio-opaque gallstones were seen. The patient underwent an emergency operation and intra-operative findings revealed mechanical small-bowel obstruction of the proximal jejunum where a 4×2 x 3 cm gallstone was impacted.

Background: While evidence from preclinical and observational cohort studies have suggested potential disparities in tumour behaviour associated with the choice of intra-operative anaesthetics, clinical evidence of tumour recurrence and metastasis remains inconclusive. We aimed to compare the impact of intra-operative anaesthesia on oncologic outcomes following hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
Methods: Adult patients scheduled for elective hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma were assigned randomly (1:1) to either propofol-based total intravenous anaesthesia or sevoflurane-based inhalational anaesthesia.
