The theory of linear mode conversion near evanescent layers is generalized for non-one-dimensionally inhomogeneous gyrotropic media. Effects are found that cannot be described within the standard one-dimensional paradigm of wave tunneling through the evanescent region when the mode coupling region assumes essentially two-dimensional topology.

Nonreciprocity is a highly desirable feature in photonic media since it allows for control over the traveling electromagnetic waves, in a way that goes far beyond ordinary filtering. One of the most conventional ways to achieve nonreciprocity is via employing gyrotropic materials; however, their time-reversal-symmetry-breaking effects are very weak and, hence, large, bulky setups combined with very strong magnetic biases are required for technologically useful devices. In this work, artificial heterostructures are introduced to enhance the effective nonreciprocal behavior by reducing the contribution of the diagonal susceptibilities in the collective response; in this way, the off-diagonal ones, that are responsible for nonreciprocity, seem bigger.

Viscoelastic reduced enhanced isotropic continua as acoustic metamaterials.

We consider a linear enhanced viscoelastic continuum of general nature but of specific type. Namely, we consider a reduced elastic continuum, satisfying Lagrange equations, where the strain energy depends on a certain (special) vectorial generalized coordinate, but does not depend on its gradient, and then add linear dissipation to the existing elastic connections. We may also represent this model as a 'bearing continuum', where all the connections are present (described by one vectorial generalized coordinate), enriched in each point by a 'distributed dynamic absorber' (described by 'special' vectorial generalized coordinate).

Strong magneto-optical effect with low external magnetic field is of great importance to achieve high-performance isolators in modern optics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect and nonreciprocal chiral transmission in low-biased gyrotropic media. A designer magneto-optical metasurface consists of a gyrotropy-near-zero slab doped with magnetic resonant inclusions.

Stimulated multifrequency Raman scattering of light in a polycrystalline sodium bromate powder.

P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, 53, Leninskiy Prospekt, Moscow, Russia. Electronic address:

The observation of multifrequency stimulated Raman scattering of light in a thin powder layer of a gyrotropic crystal of sodium bromate when excited by intense ultrashort pulses of the second optical harmonic (λ = 532 nm) of an yttrium aluminum garnet laser is reported. Five Stokes and anti-Stokes satellites corresponding to the excitation of the intramolecular optical mode of NaBrO crystal were present in the recorded spectra. In addition, Raman satellites corresponding to the excitation of lattice modes, as well as their combinations with intramolecular modes, were found in the spectra of stimulated Raman scattering.

In this paper, we analyze a cylindrical waveguide consisting of two layers of bianisotropic material with anti-symmetric magnetoelectric coupling tensors. The analysis is carried out in terms of pseudo-electric and pseudo-magnetic fields which satisfy Maxwells' equations with gyrotropic permittivity and permeability tensors. We show that the rotationally symmetric modes of the waveguide are unidirectional with transverse pseudo-electric and transverse pseudo-magnetic modes propagating in opposite directions.
