Melatonin is a mammalian hormone that has a great variety of effects. At present there is evidence that this hormone considerably reduces the manifestations of many gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases. The biological effects of melatonin are realized through the receptors located on the membranes of different animal cells. Three types of melatonin receptors are now known; of them two (MT1 and MT2) receptors were detected in mammals. Varying clinical forms of gastrointestinal diseases may be pathogenetically caused by the quality and amount of MT1 and MT2 receptors, their ratio, and endogenous melatonin activation. The purpose of this study was to develop a procedure for measuring the human blood cell levels of MT1 and MT2 receptors. For this, specific antibodies to MT1 and MT2 receptors were experimentally obtained; then indirect immunofluorescence was used to determine the content and ratio of blood mononuclear cells having these receptors onto the surface in 23 volunteers. The findings are an initial stage of this study and provide considerable opportunity to study a role of melatonin and its receptors in the pathogenesis of many diseases of the human digestive system.

Light is the most reliable environmental cue allowing animals to breed successfully when conditions are optimal. In seasonal breeders, photoperiod (length of daylight) information is sensed by the eyes and transmitted to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the master clock region located in the hypothalamus. This structure has a 24-h firing rhythm involving a cycle of clock protein synthesis and degradation, and provides the timing to synchronize the synthesis and release of melatonin, the chemical signal that transduces the photoperiod information.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) covers a range of liver conditions marked by the buildup of fat, spanning from simple fatty liver to more advanced stages like metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and cirrhosis.
Methods: Our in-depth analysis of PNPLA3_WT and mutants (I148M (MT1) and C15S (MT2)) provides insights into their structure-function dynamics in lipid metabolism, especially lipid droplet hydrolysis and ABHD5 binding. This review presents recent findings on the effect of melatonin on ram spermatozoa. This hormone regulates seasonal reproduction in the ovine species through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but it also exerts direct effects on spermatogenesis, seminal quality and fertility. In the testis, melatonin stimulates blood flow to this organ, but it also appears to be involved in the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells and the secretion of testosterone through the MT1 and MT2 receptors.
