Fluorescence emission properties of 8-azacaffeine, 8-azatheophylline and other N-alkylated 8-azaxanthines (8-azaXan) have been examined. It is shown that N-methylated 8-azaxanthines, as well as 8-azatheophylline, are highly fluorescent in aqueous medium as the neutral, and, in some instances, also as the monoanionic, forms. 8-Azacaffeine exhibits moderate emission, but its isomer, 1,3,8-trimethyl-8-azaXan, is highly fluorescent. All three 8-azaxanthines monomethylated on the triazole ring, as well as 8-azaxanthosine, exhibit increased acidity in the excited state. Some fluorescent pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidine-5,7-diones, xanthine congeners of pyrazolo[4,3-d]pyrimidines, are also reported. Many of these are good fluorescent probes in enzymatic, receptor binding, and nucleic acid systems, some examples of which are presented. In particular, 8-azaXan is an excellent fluorescent probe for purine nucleoside phosphorylases, as a fluorogenic substrate in the reverse, synthetic pathway.

Carbon dots (CDs) are versatile nanomaterials that are considered ideal for application in bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, and optoelectronics owing to their excellent photoluminescence, biocompatibility, and chemical stability features. Nitrogen doping enhances the fluorescence of CDs, alters their electronic properties, and improves their functional versatility. N-doped CDs can be synthesized via solvothermal treatment of carbon sources with nitrogen-rich precursors; however, systematic investigations of their synthesis mechanisms have been rarely reported.

Physical and photophysical properties of starch-based biopolymer films containing 5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (NTA) powder as a nanofiller were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), stationary UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as resonance light scattering (RLS) and time-resolved measurements, and where possible, analyzed with reference to pristine NTA solutions. AFM studies revealed that the addition of NTA into the starch biopolymer did not significantly affect surface roughness, with all examined films displaying similar Sq values ranging from 70.7 nm to 79.

The present study demonstrates the applicability of non-destructive and rapid spectroscopic techniques, specifically laser-induced fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible, and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy, as non-invasive, eco-friendly, and robust multi-compound analytical methods for assessing biochemical changes in maize seedling leaves resulting from the treatment of aluminium oxide nanoparticles. The recorded fluorescence spectrum of the leaves shows that the treatment of different concentration of aluminium oxide nanoparticles decreases the chlorophyll content as observed by the increase in fluorescence emission intensity ratio (FIR = I/I). The analysis of ultraviolet-visible absorption measurements reveals that the amount of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid decrease for treated plants with respect to untreated seedlings.

Emissions of metals and metalloids as a result of industrial processes, entail a great risk to human health. A high time resolution study on arsenic levels in PM in the city of Huelva (SW Spain) was carried out between September 2021 and September 2022. Hourly data obtained with a near real-time technique based on X-ray fluorescence were inter-compared with other offline analytical instrumentation.

Food allergy is increasingly prevalent and poses notable health risks, which underscores the urgent need to develop reliable and sensitive detection methods for effective identification of food allergens. This study aims to address the limitations of existing methods by developing an immunoassay utilizing bacteriophage/carbon dots (CDs)@silica core-shell nanospheres. Two CDs with different emission wavelengths (513 nm for Green CDs, 645 nm for Red CDs) were synthesized for signal development and amplification.
