Published: January 2009

Glaucoma represents the second most common cause of blindness in the United States affecting approximately 2 million Americans, with many others unaware of being afflicted. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), which is the most common of all types of glaucoma, leads to progressive optic nerve damage. If left untreated, POAG can lead to irreversible blindness. Since POAG is a relatively asymptomatic disease, prevention of long-term complications must be accomplished with regular screening for early detection and appropriate treatment. Primary care physicians play a critical role in screening at-risk populations and, therefore, reducing the risk of visual loss that characterizes advanced stages of POAG.

Purpose: The optic nerve (ON) is mechanically perturbed by eye movements that shift cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within its surrounding dural sheath. This study compared changes in ON length and CSF volume within the intraorbital ON sheath caused by eye movements in healthy subjects and patients with optic neuropathies.

Methods: Twenty-one healthy controls were compared with 11 patients having primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) at normal intraocular pressure (IOP), and 11 with chronic non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION).

Study Design: A prospective randomized controlled study.

Patients And Methods: Patients presenting with POAG and operated upon in Mansoura Ophthalmic Center in Mansoura, Egypt between February 2017 and September 2021 were enrolled.

Elevated intraocular pressure associated with sauna use: A case report.

Am J Ophthalmol Case Rep

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Colorado School of Medicine, 1675 North Aurora Ct, Aurora, CO, 80045, USA.

Purpose: To report a case of increased intraocular pressure following sauna use in a patient with severe-stage primary open-angle glaucoma.

Observations: A 64-year-old Hispanic male with severe-stage primary open-angle glaucoma experienced intraocular pressure spikes following sauna sessions, as detected in clinic and confirmed by a home tonometry device. The intraocular pressure spikes resolved after combined goniotomy and glaucoma drainage device implantation.

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of a modified suprachoroidal silicone tube (SST) shunt in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudo-exfoliative glaucoma (PXG) in this experimental study.

Methods: In this single-center, retrospective longitudinal data analysis 66 eyes of 59 patients having POAG and PXG were included and treated with modified SST shunt in combination with cataract or as a stand-alone procedure. Pre- and postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), C/D ratio and ocular adverse events (AEs) were assessed in all participants.

Purpose: To develop an artificial intelligence algorithm to automatically identify the anterior segment structures and assess multiple parameters of primary angle closure disease (PACD) in ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) images.

Design: Development and validation of an artificial intelligence algorithm for UBM images.

Methods: 2339 UBM images from 592 subjects were collected for algorithm development.
