Background: Cervical lymphadenopathy could be a manifestation of occult nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is frequently detected in NPC, and its malignant transformation is associated through the action of the oncoprotein latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1).
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a primary nasopharyngeal origin could be localized by detection of EBV LMP-1 gene in cervical metastatic lymph nodes.
Materials And Methods: In this prospective study, 32 paraffin-embedded tissues of various head and neck carcinomas and 20 normal tonsil specimens were examined for the presence of LMP-1 gene, using polymerase chain reaction.
Results: Ten of 12 nasopharyngeal biopsies and 8 of 10 metastatic lymph nodes of the same NPC were positive for LMP-1 gene. The LMP-1 gene was detected in metastatic lymph nodes of NPC, with a sensitivity of 80%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value of 100%, and negative predictive value of 91%. On the contrary, the LMP-1 gene was not detected in any of the samples of other head and neck carcinomas and their metastatic nodes as well as in tonsillar specimens. There was a significant association between the presence of LMP-1 gene and tumor location in the nasopharynx (P < .0001).
Conclusion: The presence of LMP-1 gene in metastatic cervical lymph nodes is significantly associated with nasopharyngeal origin of the carcinoma. Meanwhile, EBV has no role in the tumorigenesis of carcinomas arising from other head and neck regions.

The molecular diversity of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is defined by mutations in specific EBV genes and has been insufficiently studied in infectious mononucleosis (IM). The aim of this study was to determine all variations of the EBV latency genes EBNA-1, EBNA-2 and LMP-1 in pediatric patients with EBV-associated IM in Croatia, including previously defined SNPs and indels as well as previously undocumented polymorphisms. The vast majority of EBV isolates (71/72) were determined as EBV type 1 while EBNA-1 genes were classified exclusively as previously defined EBNA-1 prototypes, with 22/72 sequences categorized as P-Ala and 50/72 sequences as P-Thr.

Background: Proteostasis is a critical aging hallmark responsible for removing damaged or misfolded proteins and their aggregates by improving proteasomal degradation through the autophagy-lysosome pathway (ALP) and the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). Research on the impact of heat-killed probiotic bacteria and their structural components on aging hallmarks and innate immune responses is scarce, yet enhancing these effects could potentially delay age-related diseases.
Results: This study introduces a novel heat-killed Levilactobacillus brevis strain MKAK9 (HK MKAK9), along with its exopolysaccharide (EPS), demonstrating their ability to extend longevity by improving proteostasis and immune responses in wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans.

Hodgkin lymphoma is histologically characterised by the presence of Hodgkin (H) and Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells originating from germinal centre B-cells rearranged in the IgV gene. The formation of multinucleated RS cells is a product of telomere organisation in a process initiated by telomere aggregate accumulation in mononuclear H cells and may be mediated by latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) expression. LMP-1 is the main oncoprotein of EBV and supports several tumourigenic processes.
