Rationale, Aims And Objectives: To develop a multi-state Markov model to predict multi-state progression of age-related hearing loss (ARHL).

Method: A systematic searching of literature from Medline (1966-2005) was performed. The disease process for hearing loss was modelled as a four-state continuous-time Markov process. We estimated the progression rates for each study separately, then calculated weighted averages over all studies across age groups, weighting for each study by the inverse of variance. The pooled estimates were obtained and transition probabilities between states were illustrated.

Results: The progression of hearing loss increased with the ascending frequencies across all age groups. Men had significantly faster progression rates in all frequencies and age groups except for the age group of 90 years or older. In comparison between ears, the progression of hearing would be slightly faster in left ears initially in early elder life and did not show any difference in further ageing and later hearing declines. With the pooled estimates of progression rates, the probabilities of hearing deterioration could be obtained.

Conclusions: The multi-state model can quantify the nature course of hearing progression in ARHL. Predictions of hearing status can be simulated either at population or individual level with this model.

Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity is attributed to the aberrant accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the inner ear. Antioxidants represented by α-lipoic acid (ALA) have been demonstrated to scavenge ROS in the cochlea, while effective delivery of these agents in vivo remains a major challenge. Here, a novel polydopamine (PDA) nanogel decorated adhesive and responsive hierarchical microcarriers for controllable is presented ALA delivery and deafness prevention.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most commonly used tools in neuroscience. However, it implies exposure to high noise levels. Exposure to noise can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss, especially when the exposure is long and/or repeated.

Purpose: Infants needing neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) intervention have protracted timelines for diagnosis after not passing their newborn hearing screening despite being at higher risk for congenital hearing loss. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of early hearing detection for infants with a history of NICU admission. The secondary aim was to determine if diagnostic audiology services within the NICU setting accelerated diagnosis and intervention.

Foot reflexology is a non-invasive and safe complementary therapy that works by massaging the reflex zones of the feet and exerts systemic or whole-body regulation through meridian nerve conduction. This therapy is commonly used in the treatment of various conditions such as autism and Parkinson's disease. However, there is limited reporting on the use of foot reflexology therapy for infants with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).

Objectives: The World Health Organization's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework launched in 2019 is used to assess the intrinsic capacity of older individuals. Older women may face greater socioeconomic disadvantages, which can impact their physical and mental well-being. Therefore, we examined sex differences in intrinsic capacity and the influence of socioeconomic status.
