Background/aims: Functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) Panometry has demonstrated utility in the assessment of esophageal motility as a complement to existing methodologies like high-resolution manometry. However, as FLIP is typically performed with sedation during routine endoscopy, there is potential for impact of sedation agents on esophageal motility. We aim to examine the effects of conscious sedation with midazolam and fentanyl on FLIP Panometry metrics and classification.

Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) has been used for decades in humans to model arterial baroreceptor unloading and represents a powerful tool for evaluating cardiovascular responses to orthostatic challenge. However, LBNP studies in animals have been limited to conditions of anesthesia or sedation, where cardiovascular reflexes are altered. Given the consequent uncertainties, the usefulness of LBNP studies in these preclinical models has been severely hampered.

Awake tracheal intubation is the gold standard in the management of predicted difficult airway because of its high success rate and safety profile. We present the case of a patient with facial trauma who underwent orotracheal intubation with combined videolaryngoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy, under conscious sedation with intermittent boluses of ketamine and dexmedetomidine.

Background: Diagnostically adequate contrast and spatial resolution in brain MRI require prolonged scan times, leading to motion artifacts and image degradation in awake children. Rapid multi-parametric techniques can produce diagnostic images in awake children, which could help to avoid the need for sedation.
Objective: To evaluate the utility of a rapid echo-planar imaging (EPI)-based multi-inversion spin and gradient echo (MI-SAGE) technique for generating multi-parametric quantitative brain maps and synthetic contrast images in awake pediatric participants.
