Introduction: Seamless interoperability of ophthalmic clinical data is beneficial for improving patient care and advancing research through the integration of data from various sources. Such consolidation increases the amount of data available, leading to more robust statistical analyses, and improving the accuracy and reliability of artificial intelligence models. However, the lack of consistent, harmonized data formats and meanings (syntactic and semantic interoperability) poses a significant challenge in sharing ophthalmic data.

Introduction: To support research projects that require medical data from multiple sites is one of the goals of the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII). The data integration centers (DIC) at university medical centers in Germany provide patient data via FHIR® in compliance with the MII core data set (CDS). Requirements for data protection and other legal bases for processing prefer decentralized processing of the relevant data in the DICs and the subsequent exchange of aggregated results for cross-site evaluation.

Faculty of Medicine Carl Gustav Carus, Institute for Medical Informatics and Biometry, Technische Universität Dresden, Dresden, Germany.
Introduction: Obtaining real-world data from routine clinical care is of growing interest for scientific research and personalized medicine. Despite the abundance of medical data across various facilities - including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and physician practices - the intersectoral exchange of information remains largely hindered due to differences in data structure, content, and adherence to data protection regulations. In response to this challenge, the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) was launched in Germany, focusing initially on university hospitals to foster the exchange and utilization of real-world data through the development of standardized methods and tools, including the creation of a common core dataset.

Introduction: Older military veterans often present with unique and complex risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. Increasing veteran participation in research studies offers one avenue to advance the field and improve health outcomes.
Methods: To this end, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) partnered to build infrastructure, improve collaboration, and intensify targeted recruitment of veterans.
