EVALUATION OF ETORPHINE-MEDETOMIDINE-MIDAZOLAMAZAPERONE FOR IMMOBILIZATION IN CAPTIVE PRONGHORN ().

J Zoo Wildl Med

December 2024

Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, S7N 5B4, SK, Canada.

Etorphine based immobilization protocols are reported to be effective in pronghorn; however, information on cardiorespiratory effects is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and cardiopulmonary effects of etorphine, medetomidine, midazolam, and azaperone for immobilization in captive pronghorn. Additionally, the effects of endotracheal intubation and manual ventilation on cardiopulmonary variables were assessed.

Background: Peripheral intravenous (PIV) infiltration and extravasation are common complications of intravenous fluid administration. Here, we aim to investigate risk factors associated with major adverse events following PIV infiltration, which may help risk stratify those who require early surgical consultation.

Methods: Retrospectively, patients were identified who had a documented PIV infiltration or extravasation event at 3 academic hospitals between 2015 and 2022.

: The number of seriously injured elderly patients is continuously rising. Several studies have underlined the benefit of orthogeriatric co-management in treating older patients with a proximal femur fracture. The basis of this orthogeriatric co-management is a certification as a Centre for Geriatric Trauma (ATZ).

Background: An accurate estimate of the survival and mortality at the initial trauma evaluation is essential to ensure appropriate triage and stratification of the patients for progressive care. One of the recognized tools for predicting mortality is the BIG Score, composed of admission base deficit, international normalized ratio (INR), and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). This study evaluates the BIG scale in predicting survival and mortality rates among pediatric trauma patients.

Introduction: Patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery may experience hemodynamic instability during the induction of general anesthesia, and anesthetic agents with minimal hemodynamic effects should be administered. Midazolam, a classic benzodiazepine anesthetic, is known to have relatively weak circulatory depression during anesthesia induction compared to other sedatives. On the other hand, remimazolam, a newly approved short-acting benzodiazepine anesthetic, is expected to have fewer circulatory depressant effects.
