Vertically aligned ZnO-ZnS heterojunction nanowire (NW) arrays were synthesized by thermal evaporation in a tube furnace under controlled conditions. Both ZnO and ZnS are of wurtzite structure, and the axial heterojunctions are formed by epitaxial growth of ZnO on ZnS with an orientation relationship of [0001](ZnO)//[0001](ZnS). Vertical ZnS NW arrays have been obtained by selectively etching ZnO-ZnS NW arrays. Cathodoluminescence measurements of ZnO-ZnS NW arrays and ZnS NW arrays show emissions at 509 and 547 nm, respectively. Both types of aligned NW arrays have been applied to convert mechanical energy into electricity when they are deflected by a conductive AFM tip in contact mode. The received results are explained by the mechanism proposed for nanogenerator.

Potocatalytic hydrogen evolution represnets a promising way to achieve renewable energy sources. Dual heterojunctions with an inverse opal structure are proposed for addressing fundamental challenges (low surface area, inefficient light absorption, and poor charge separation) in photocatalytic water splitting. Inverse opal structure and CoO were introduced to design and synthesize a ZnO/ZnS/CoO (IO-ZnO/ZnS/CoO) photocatalyst.

In order to greatly improve the photocatalytic properties, corn-like ZnO/ZnS heterojunctions with a particle size of about 60-71 nm have been synthesized by the solvothermal method and the subsequent sulfuration process. A declining trend is found for the specific surface area with increasing sulfuration time. The corn-like ZnO/ZnS heterojunctions exhibit good photocatalytic properties.

The nanosized hybrid material ZnO-ZnS was synthesized using the well-known sol-gel method, as a simple and environmentally friendly procedure. The material was then characterized using various techniques including FESEM, TEM, UV-vis, DRS, EDS, XRD, and FT-IR. The characterization studies revealed the generation of ZnO-ZnS nanoparticles with a mean size of around 25 nm.

In this study, a ZnO/ZnS nanocluster heterojunction photoelectrode rich in surface oxygen defects (Vo-ZnO/ZnS) was prepared by applying a simple anion substitution and nitrogen atmosphere annealing method. The synergism between defect and surface engineering significantly improved the photocatalysts. Given this synergism, Vo-ZnO/ZnS was endowed with a long carrier lifetime, narrow band gap, high carrier density, and high performance toward electron transfer under light conditions.
