Burkitt lymphoma.

Hum Pathol

December 2024

Department of Hematopathology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, USA. Electronic address:

Burkitt lymphoma is a mature aggressive B-cell neoplasm with distinctive clinical and morphologic features, a germinal center B-cell immunophenotype, a high proliferation index and MYC rearrangement with an immunoglobulin gene partner. Initially described in equatorial Africa by a surgeon, Denis Burkitt, African (endemic) Burkitt lymphoma was the first neoplasm shown to be associated with a virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and the first neoplasm shown to be associated with a chromosomal translocation, IGH::MYC. In this article, we provide a brief historical introduction of Burkitt lymphoma, followed by a review of all aspects of this neoplasm including pathogenesis, clinical presentation, morphology, immunophenotype, cytogenetics and molecular findings.

Dietary fibre and health: the story so far.

Proc Nutr Soc

May 2023

Human Nutrition & Exercise Research Centre, Centre for Healthier Lives, Population Health Sciences Institute, William Leech Building, Newcastle University, Newcastle on Tyne NE2 4HH, UK.

The present paper reviews progress in research on dietary fibre and human health over the past five decades. There is now convincing evidence from prospective cohort studies that diets low in dietary fibre are associated with increased risk of common non-communicable diseases including CVD, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. These findings provide strong support for hypotheses proposed by Denis Burkitt 50 years ago, based on very limited evidence but with considerable imagination and insight.

Non-communicable diseases are those conditions to which causative infectious agents cannot readily be assigned. It is increasingly likely that at least some of these conditions are due to the breakdown of the previously mutualistic intestinal microbiota under the influence of a polluted, biocide-rich, environment. Following the mid-20th century African studies of Denis Burkitt, the environmental cause of conditions such as obesity has been ascribed to the absence of sufficient fibre in the modern diet, however in itself that is insufficient to explain the parallel rise of problems with both the immune system and of mental health.

Article Synopsis
  • Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is primarily known for causing respiratory infections, but it can also lead to rare non-respiratory issues like myocarditis, with only two adult cases previously reported.
  • A 14-year-old girl with Burkitt leukemia developed severe myocarditis due to hMPV, diagnosed through RT-PCR and MRI, and she received treatment with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and IV immunoglobulins.
  • This is the first documented case of hMPV myocarditis in a pediatric patient that required advanced respiratory support, highlighting the virus's potential severity in immunocompromised individuals.
