Published: September 2008

Although chemical functionalization at carboxyl groups of nanocarbons has been vigorously investigated and the identities and quantities of the carboxyl groups have been well studied, the location of carboxyl groups had not previously been clarified. Here, we show that site identification of carboxyl groups is possible by using Pt-ammine complex as a stain. After Pt-ammine complexes were mixed with graphenes in ethanol, many Pt-ammine complex clusters with an average size of about 0.6 nm were found to exist at edges of graphene sheets, indicating that the carboxyl groups mainly existed at the graphene edges. These results will make it easier to add functionalities by chemical modifications for various applications of nanotubes and other nanocarbons.

Synthesis of 1,4-Diketones from Esters Enabled by a Tetraborylethane Reagent.

Org Lett

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Oxo Synthesis and Selective Oxidation, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou, Gansu 730000, China.

A modular synthesis method for 1,4-diketones has been developed. Utilizing inexpensive carboxylic acid esters as carbonyl sources and tetraborylethane () as a nucleophilic reagent, a one-pot strategy for constructing two C-C bonds was established. Notably, this reaction proceeds without the involvement of transition metals and exhibits excellent functional group compatibility.

Impact of Combined Thermo- and Photo-Oxidation on the Physicochemical Properties of Oxo-Biodegradable Low-Density Polyethylene Films.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2025

Unidad de Materiales, Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán, Calle 43 No. 130 Col. Chuburná de Hidalgo, Merida 97205, Mexico.

This research addresses the study of the combined effect of two abiotic treatments, a thermo-oxidative treatment followed by a photo-oxidative treatment with ultraviolet light, on the physicochemical properties of commercially available low-density polyethylene films with an oxo-degradant additive (OXOLDPE) and without (LDPE). The change in the oxidized film properties was characterized using FTIR, XRD, TGA, GPC, and SEM analytical techniques. The results indicated that the increment in carbonyl index (CI) and crystallinity percentage (X) was higher for those films that received the combined oxidative treatments compared with those that received only one of them, thermo- or photo-oxidative treatment.

Calcified tissues in living organisms, such as bone, dentin, and enamel, often require surgical intervention for treatment. However, advances in regenerative medicine have increased the demand for materials to assist in regenerating these tissues. Among the various forms of calcium phosphate (CaP), tricalcium phosphate (TCP)-particularly its α-TCP form-stands out due to its high solubility and efficient calcium release, making it a promising candidate for bone regeneration applications.

Transparent X-ray shielding polymer films were developed by bulk photo copolymerization of in situ prepared bismuth carboxylate prepolymers with polymerizable exomethylene moieties and ,-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA). The bismuth-containing prepolymers were prepared via the polycondensation of BiPh, 2-octenylsuccinic acid (OSA), and itaconic acid (IA) bearing an exomethylene group for polymerization. OSA was a chain extender by intermolecular condensation and a stopper by intramolecular cyclization to inhibit cross-linkage.

Background: In the era of resistance, the design and search for new "small" molecules with a narrow spectrum of activity that target a protein or enzyme specific to a certain bacterium with high selectivity and minimal side effects remains an urgent problem of medicinal chemistry. In this regard, we developed and successfully implemented a strategy for the search for new hybrid molecules, namely, the not broadly known [2-(3-R-1-[1,2,4]-triazol-5-yl)phenyl]amines. They can act as "building blocks" and allow for the introduction of certain structural motifs into the desired final products in order to enhance the antistaphylococcal effect.
