Clinical and ultrasound biomicroscopic features in iris melanocytoma.

Department of Ophthalmology and Neurosurgery, University of Siena, Siena, Italy.

Published: February 2009

The clinical and ultrasound biomicroscopic features of two cases of iris melanocytoma are evaluated. On ultrasound biomicroscopy examination, iris melanocytoma appears as a highly reflective nodular mass with a smooth or irregular surface and sharp and well-defined edges. Ultrasound biomicroscopy also allows clear visualization and measurement of the tumors. These findings were compared with clinical and histopathologic findings.

Iridial melanocytoma in a ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis): A case report and review of avian melanocytic neoplasia.

Vet Ophthalmol

September 2023

Comparative Ophthalmology Service, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.

A 21-year-old, suspected female captive ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis) was followed for 3 years due to an iridial mass of the left eye (OS) that progressively increased in size. Enucleation of OS was eventually recommended due to the iridial mass taking up approximately 75% of the anterior chamber, and the bird seemed less active. A complete physical examination, complete blood cell count, biochemistry, and survey radiographs were performed pre-surgery with no findings indicating metastasis.

Anterior Uveal Melanocytoma: Role of Diagnostic FNAB.

Ocul Oncol Pathol

February 2023

Department of Ophthalmic Oncology, Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Introduction: Anterior uveal melanocytoma (AUM) pose a diagnostic challenge as they can mimic growing melanomas. Establishing a definitive diagnosis of melanocytoma necessitates cytologic or histopathologic confirmation. We describe the clinical presentation and characteristics of fifteen pathologically proven AUM cases and assess the role of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) as a safe and effective tool for diagnosis.

Diagnosing Corneal Pigmentation in Small Animals.

Vet Clin North Am Small Anim Pract

March 2023

Antech Diagnostics, 7555 Danbro Crescent, Mississauga, Ontario L5N 6P9, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • The cornea needs to be transparent for proper light transmission, and any loss of this transparency can lead to vision problems.
  • Corneal pigmentation happens when melanin builds up in the cornea's epithelial cells, and various conditions like corneal sequestrum and limbal melanocytoma need to be ruled out to diagnose it accurately.
  • Multiple eye surface issues, including tear film deficiency and breed-related syndromes, can be linked to corneal pigmentation, so it's essential to pinpoint the exact cause for effective treatment.
