The rise in COVID-19 cases in late 2021 posed a grave threat to the public health system and the economy of Jamaica. A key pillar of controlling COVID-19 includes rapid diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals and their contacts. Hence, we evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of weekly deployment of antigen rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) by conducting three 6-week studies within high-risk populations in Jamaica.

Background: Stroke is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite innovative developments in acute stroke treatment techniques in modern society, many stroke survivors still experience complications, leading to a demand for complementary and alternative medicines, including traditional medicine. Bloodletting at the ear apex (BLEA) is a nonpharmacological intervention used for various diseases, including acute stroke, in traditional medicine in East Asian countries, including China and Korea.

Background: Blood cultures are vital to diagnostic workups among many hospitalized patients, providing valuable information about bloodstream infections (BSIs), which cause roughly 250 000 deaths annually between North America and Europe. Despite advances in health care, blood culture contamination remains a substantial problem, with deleterious effects on patient mortality, patient and hospital costs, and microbial resistance. This article reviews the repercussions of blood culture contamination on the health care system and delineates evidence-based strategies to decrease contamination rates.

Ropeginterferon alfa-2b (ropegIFN), a new-generation interferon-based agent, has been approved in Japan for patients with polycythemia vera (PV) who are ineligible for or respond inadequately to conventional treatment. However, long-term outcomes with ropegIFN in Japanese patients have not been reported. This extension of a phase 2 study of ropegIFN in Japanese patients with PV aimed to determine its long-term safety/efficacy, and changes over time in JAK2 V617F allele burden.
