Electron transfer dissociation (ETD) can dissociate highly charged ions. Efficient analysis of ions dissociated with ETD requires accurate determination of charge states for calculation of molecular weight. We created an algorithm to assign the charge state of ions often used for ETD. The program, Charge Prediction Machine (CPM), uses Bayesian decision theory to account for different charge reduction processes encountered in ETD and can also handle multiplex spectra. CPM correctly assigned charge states to 98% of the 13,097 MS2 spectra from a combined data set of four experiments. In a comparison between CPM and a competing program, Charger (ThermoFisher), CPM produced half the mistakes.

The emergence of spinon quasiparticles, which carry spin but lack charge, is a hallmark of collective quantum phenomena in low-dimensional quantum spin systems. While the existence of spinons has been demonstrated through scattering spectroscopy in ensemble samples, real-space imaging of these quasiparticles within individual spin chains has remained elusive. In this study, we construct individual Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains using open-shell [2]triangulene molecules as building blocks.

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are permselective membranes that, in principle, only allow the flow of ions with a specific charge sign, opposite to that of the fixed membrane ionic groups (counter-ions). This charge-based selectivity, like the size-based selectivity of classic semipermeable membranes, leads to an uneven distribution of permeating ions on the two sides of the membrane, which allows for ion separation or recovery in various processes in industry or environmental protection. Here, we apply the principles of mass balance, charge neutrality, and equality of electrochemical potentials in the state of thermodynamic equilibrium to provide a simple method for estimating the Gibbs-Donnan factors and the equilibrium concentrations of permeating ions in two compartments separated by an ideal IEM, i.

After cyclo-pentazolate anion, a 5/6 fused structure of N is constructed, and four novel nitrogen-rich ionic compounds are assembled on its basis. The results of the quantum calculations revealed an uneven distribution of electrons on cyclo-N , with significant charge density near the N5/N9 atoms and an ADCH charge of -0.425.

The overexpression of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) protein is specifically related to tumor cell proliferation in breast cancers. Its presence in biological serum samples indicates presence or progression of cancer, becoming a promise biomarker. However, their detection needs a simple and high accuracy platform.

C-terminal amidation of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) is a frequent minor modification used to improve antibacterial potency, commonly ascribed to increased positive charge, protection from proteases, and a stabilized secondary structure. Although the activity of AMPs is primarily associated with the ability to penetrate bacterial membranes, hitherto the effect of amidation on this interaction has not been understood in detail. Here, we show that amidation of the scorpion-derived membranolytic peptide AamAP1-Lys produces a potent analog with faster bactericidal activity, increased membrane permeabilization, and greater Gram-negative membrane penetration associated with greater conformational flexibility.
