Thirty-five glycerol-assimilating bacteria have recently been isolated from soil samples. Amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis revealed that these strains are grouped into four genetically different types of bacteria. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of glycerol metabolites produced by the three selected strains (strains HH7, HH12, and HH31) revealed that extracts of culture liquid with ethyl acetate contains acetyl monoglyceride (monoacetin), which has not previously been reported as a glycerol metabolite and is used as a solvent, plasticizer, and food additive, as well as for other industrial purposes. The sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA genes from the selected strains showed that all of them belong to the Enterobacteriaceae.

Physiological consequences of Aldolase C deficiency during lactation.

PLoS One

December 2024

Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, United States of America.

The lactating mammary gland strongly induces de novo lipogenesis (DNL) to support the synthesis of fatty acids, triglycerides, and cholesterol found within milk. In monogastric species, glucose is a major substrate utilized for DNL within the lactating mammary gland and must be efficiently taken up and processed to supply cytosolic acetyl-CoA for DNL. Along with the enzymes of the DNL pathway, the glycolytic enzyme, Aldolase C (Aldoc), is transcriptionally upregulated and is highly expressed during lactation in the mammary gland, suggesting a role for Aldoc in lactation.

Chronic heat stress is capable of reducing the growth performance, causing damage to the liver structure, and altering the liver glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides L.).

Fish Physiol Biochem

Key Aboratory of Tropical and Subtropical Fishery Resource Application and Cultivation, China Ministry of Agriculture, Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, Guangzhou, 510380, China.

High temperatures cause abnormal energy metabolism and inhibit the growth of fish in aquaculture. However, the mechanism of energy metabolism under chronic heat stress is still unknown. In this study, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, LMB) was treated with 25℃, 29℃, and 33℃ for 8 weeks.

Acetyl-TAG (3-acetyl-1,2-diacylglycerol), unique triacylglycerols (TAG) possessing an acetate group at the -3 position, exhibit valuable properties, such as reduced viscosity and freezing points. Previous attempts to engineer acetyl-TAG production in oilseed crops did not achieve the high levels found in naturally producing seeds. Here, we demonstrate the successful generation of camelina and pennycress transgenic lines accumulating nearly pure acetyl-TAG at 93 mol% and 98 mol%, respectively.

REGULATOR OF FATTY ACID SYNTHESIS proteins regulate de novo fatty acid synthesis by modulating hetACCase distribution.

Plant Cell

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Tree Genetics and Breeding, Co-Innovation Center for Sustainable Forestry in Southern China, Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Poplar Germplasm Enhancement and Variety Improvement, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing 210037, China.

Article Synopsis
  • In plants, hetACCase is crucial for starting fatty acid synthesis by producing malonyl-CoA, with its activity tightly regulated depending on the plant's needs.
  • A coexpression analysis in Arabidopsis identified the gene REGULATOR OF FATTY ACID SYNTHESIS 1 (RFS1), which interacts with CARBOXYLTRANSFERASE INTERACTOR 1 (CTI1) and plays a role in regulating hetACCase.
  • Knockout experiments showed that loss of RFS genes increases hetACCase activity and fatty acid content in plants, suggesting a potential strategy for breeding plants with higher oil yields.

Background: ()-5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-4-chromanone (HMC), a homoisoflavonoid isolated from , has significant anti-adipogenesis potential; it regulates adipogenic transcription factors. However, whether HMC improves hepatic steatosis in hepatocytes remains vague. This study investigated whether HMC ameliorates hepatic steatosis in free fatty acid-treated human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells, and if so, its mechanism of action was analyzed.
