CREM mutant mice have behaviors similar to symptoms seen in ADHD such as the increased level of physical activity as well as altered emotional and stress responses. Our results demonstrate that all the four participants with ADHD had elevated levels of nocturnal melatonin in urine samples before starting the methylphenidate treatment. We hypothesize that abnormalities in CREM protein functions or mutations in the CREM gene may be underlying at least some of the symptoms in patients with ADHD.

Loss of anticancer NK cell function in AML patients is associated with fatal disease progression and remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that AML-blasts isolated from patients rapidly inhibit NK cell function and escape NK cell-mediated killing. Transcriptome analysis of NK cells exposed to AML-blasts revealed increased CREM expression and transcriptional activity, indicating enhanced cAMP signalling, confirmed by uniform production of the cAMP-inducing prostanoid PGE2 by all AML-blast isolates from patients.

Lead, a prevalent heavy metal, impairs the immune system by affecting T cell function. Similarly, zinc deficiency adversely affects T cells, with zinc deficiency and lead exposure being linked to reduced interleukin-2 (IL-2) production. Zinc deficiency has been associated with increased expression of the transcription factor CREM 100 kDa, which downregulates IL-2.
