Modified neomycin prepared by the ionic coupling on xanthan with an activity of 380 UI/mg was characterized in regard to its in vitro and in vivo release rate and therapeutic action with artificial tear eluent. The dynamic system in vitro release showed that after 4 h, there appears a "zero-order" kinetic. Ophthalmic inserts were prepared from modified neomycin and they are used in treating bacterial conjunctivitis. Sterilization of the conjunctival sac is obtained 12 h after insert administration.

In order to investigate the bacterial species present in the conjunctival sacs of dogs with bacterial conjunctivitis in Wuhan (Hongshan District, Wuchang District, Jiangxia District, and Huangpi District) and their resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics, samples of conjunctival sac secretions were collected from 56 dogs with bacterial conjunctivitis in various regions of Wuhan. Drug susceptibility testing for aminoglycoside antibiotics was performed on the most commonly isolated gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The expression of two aminoglycoside modifying enzyme genes, and , and three 16S rRNA methyltransferase genes, , and , were analyzed by PCR.

Two versatile yet simple methods, colorimetric and spectrofluorimetric, were utilized for the quantitation of nonchromophore neomycin using silver nanoparticles modified with fluorescein. Fluorescein was excited at 485 nm (emission at 515 nm); when it is deposited on the surface of silver nanoparticles, its fluorescence intensity at 515 nm is quenched. Neomycin restores the fluorescence level at 515 nm by displacing fluorescein from nanoparticle binding sites.

The escalating use of antibiotics across diverse sectors, including human healthcare, agriculture, and livestock, has led to their pervasive presence in the environment, raising concerns about their impact on ecosystems and human health. Traditional detection methods, reliant on high-performance liquid chromatography and immuno-assays, face challenges of complexity, cross-reactivity, and limited specificity. Aptamer-based biosensors offer a promising alternative, leveraging the specificity, stability, and cost-effectiveness of aptamers.
