Biomolecules-carbon nanotube (CNT) interactions are of great importance in CNT-based drug delivery systems and biomedical devices. In this study, a spontaneous encapsulation of a globular protein into the CNT was observed through molecular dynamics simulation. The free energy of the system was found to be decreased after the encapsulation, which is the most fundamental reason for this spontaneous process. The system enthalpy decrease was found to make a dominant contribution to the free-energy change, and the system entropy increase also contributes to the spontaneous process. During the insertion, the protein makes a stepwise conformational change to maximize its affinity to the CNT walls as well as the protein-CNT interactions, mainly resulting in the deformation of the beta-sheets in the protein. As a whole, the CNT was considered to attract protein molecules nonspecifically although the groups with high hydrophobicity and/or aromatic rings show great affinity.

Multiplexed microRNA (miRNA) detection has proven valuable in disease diagnosis; yet, the development of advanced tools for their analysis remains a subject of broad interest. Here, we propose a novel single-particle method for multiplexed miRNA detection using self-directed hydrogel microspheres, which feature supersegmented compartments for loading analyte probes and an air-encapsulated region that grants the microsphere a unique preferred posture in aqueous solutions. By exploiting microfluidic technology, we can widely adjust the size of the microspheres and the number of compartments can be widely adjusted.

The controlled growth of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite atop three-dimensional (3D) perovskite films reduces interfacial recombination and impedes ion migration, thus improving the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Unfortunately, the random orientation of the spontaneously formed 2D phase atop the pre-deposited 3D perovskite film can deteriorate charge extraction owing to energetic disorder, limiting the maximum attainable efficiency and long-term stability of the PSCs. Here, we introduce a meta-amidinopyridine ligand and the solvent post-dripping step to generate a highly ordered 2D perovskite phase on the surface of a 3D perovskite film.

We report the features of spontaneous bilateral thyroid follicular cell carcinoma in a 10-year-old male beagle. Necropsy revealed bilateral masses on the trachea, corresponding to the left and right sides of the thyroid gland. The masses were elastic, encapsulated, and distinct, with no connecting tumor tissues between them.
