We predict extremely large and positive intramolecular magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) for coupled diradicals constructed from nitronyl nitroxide (NN) and oxoverdazyl (o-VER). These radicals have the general formula o-VER(N)-nC-NN where nC represents an olefinic spacer with n = 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. Species like o-VER(C)-nC-NN have negative coupling constants. The atoms in the parentheses show the point of attachment of the coupler to the verdazyl moiety. Both the N-linked series and C-linked series have comparable stability. The triplet molecular geometries were optimized by the density functional (UB3LYP) method using the 6-311 g(d,p) basis set. This was followed by single-point UB3LYP calculations using 6-311++g(3df,3pd) basis. To calculate J, single-point broken-symmetry computations were performed on the optimized triplet geometries and using the same basis set. The N-linked diradicals coupled through conjugated polyenes are topologically different. These are found to have coupling constants of the order of 1000 cm(-1), whereas the C-linked diradicals show coupling constants of the order of -100 cm(-1). In general, for both cases, the absolute magnitude of the coupling constant decreases with the increase in the length of the spacer.

UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS based chemometric analysis for solvent polarity effect evaluation on phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity in habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq) fruit extract.

Centro de Investigación y Asistencia en Tecnología y Diseño del Estado de Jalisco (CIATEJ) Unidad Sureste, Tablaje Catastral Km 5.5 Carretera Sierra Papacal-Chuburná Puerto, Parque Científico Tecnológico de, Yucatán, Mexico.

The effect of solvents with different polarities on the recovery of phytochemicals (carotenoids, capsaicinoids, and phenolic compounds) from habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) and their association with antioxidant activity (ABTS and DPPH) was evaluated through Ultra-Performance-Liquid Chromatography coupled with a Photodiode Array Detector and a Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS)-based chemometric analysis, including linear correlation, multiple linear regression, and principal component analysis (PCA). The solvent polarity scale was established according to solvent dielectric constants (ɛ). Color variation (ΔE) was used to determine the presence of carotenoids, with the highest ΔE obtained using low-polarity solvents (hexane and ethyl acetate).

Carbon-supported single-atom catalysts exhibit exceptional properties in acidic CO reduction. However, traditional carbon supports fall short in building high-site-utilization and CO-rich interfacial environments, and the structural evolution of single-atom metals and catalytic mechanisms under realistic conditions remain ambiguous. Herein, an interconnected mesoporous carbon nanofiber and carbon nanosheet network (IPCF@CS) is reported, derived from microphase-separated block copolymer, to improve catalytic efficiency of isolated Ni.

Machine learning methods have been important in the study of phase transitions. Unsupervised methods are particularly attractive because they do not require prior knowledge of the existence of a phase transition. In this work we focus on the constant magnetization Ising model in two (2D) and three (3D) dimensions.

Heavy atom effects on synthetic pyranoanthocyanin analogues.

Photochem Photobiol

December 2024

Instituto de Química, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Pyranoflavylium cations are synthetic analogues of pyranoanthocyanins, the much more color-stable compounds that are formed spontaneously from grape anthocyanins during the maturation of red wines. In the present work, our studies of the photophysical properties of pyranoanthocyanin analogues are extended to include nine pyranoflavylium cations substituted with one or two bromo and/or iodo heavy atoms. The room temperature fluorescence, 77 K fluorescence and phosphorescence, triplet formation in solution, and sensitized singlet oxygen formation, with excited state acidity suppressed by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid, are compared to those of similar pyranoflavylium cations that do not contain a heavy atom.

Conformational Space of 3-Chloropropionic Acid in Gas Phase Explored by Rotational Spectroscopy.

Departamento de Química Física y Química Inorgánica, Facultad de Ciencias─I.U. CINQUIMA, Paseo de Belén, 7, 47011 Valladolid, Spain.

The conformational space of 3-chloropropionic acid has been studied under the isolated conditions of a supersonic expansion using Stark-modulated free-jet absorption millimeter-wave and centimeter-wave chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy techniques. The rotational spectra originating from the three most stable conformers including Cl and Cl isotopologues were observed in both experiments using helium expansion while a partial conformational relaxation involving skeletal rearrangements takes place in an argon expansion. The rotational parameters, geometries, and energy order were determined from the experiment, allowing a comparison with quantum chemical predictions.
