Assessing the differences and similarities between hospital chains and independents regarding revenues, profits, and community contributions. | LitMetric
Hospital systems or chains continue to grow their market share relative to independent hospitals. This trend generates concerns among health care industry observers as historical performance suggests chains charge more for health care services than the independents while providing reduced contributions to their community. This study empirically assesses key performance measures of 67 acute-care hospitals in Virginia by testing if there are differences between chains and independents regarding total patient revenues, revenues per admission, profitability and community support, including charity care, bad debt, taxes paid and Medicaid participation. Implications to industry policy-makers as well as to hospital executives and marketing managers are then presented.
Introduction: Following a preliminary work validating the technological feasibility of an adaptive workflow with Ethos for whole-breast cancer, this study aims to clinically evaluate the automatic segmentation generated by Ethos.
Material And Methods: Twenty patients initially treated on a TrueBeam accelerator for different breast cancer indications (right/left, lumpectomy/mastectomy) were replanned using the Ethos emulator. The adaptive workflow was performed using 5 randomly selected extended CBCTs per patient.
Combining helical foldamers with α-peptides can produce α-helix mimetics with a reduced peptide character and enhanced resistance to proteolysis. Previously, we engineered a hybrid peptide-oligourea sequence replicating the N-terminal α-helical domain of p53 to achieve high affinity binding to hDM2. Here, we further advance this strategy by combining the foldamer approach with side chain cross-linking to create more constrained cell-permeable inhibitors capable of effectively engaging the target within cells.
Independent methods show that sub-microMolar concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a member of the PFAS family of "forever chemicals", change the properties of DPPC vesicle bilayers. Specifically, calorimetry measurements show that PFOA at concentrations as low as 0.1 nM lowers DPPC's gel-liquid crystalline transition enthalpy by several J/g without changing the transition temperature (), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) data illustrate that PFOA markedly broadens the size distribution of DPPC vesicles.

A high-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity and insulin resistance, which may exacerbate amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) pathology during Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) accumulate in obese or insulin-resistant patients and animal models. However, roles of accumulated BCAAs and their metabolites, branched-chain keto acids (BCKAs), in the HFD-induced deterioration of AD and the underlying mechanisms remains largely unclear.
