Study Design: Experimental animal study.
Objective: The authors conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of waxed paper in preventing postlaminectomy epidural fibrosis in rats.
Summary Of Background Data: Extensive epidural fibrosis after lumbar surgery may be the underlying cause in most cases of failed back surgery syndrome. Various materials have been used to prevent epidural fibrosis, but only moderate success has been shown.
Methods: Laminectomies were performed at the fourth lumbar vertebra (L-4) in 30 rats. Waxed paper or Gore-Tex was applied in a blinded fashion to the operative sites. In the control group, only the L-4 laminectomy was performed. The rats were killed 28 days after surgery.
Results: The extent of epidural fibrosis was evaluated by histologic analysis. There was a meaningful statistical difference among the waxed paper group and the Gore-Tex group compared with the control group, but there was no difference when the effectiveness of waxed paper was compared with that of Gore-Tex.
Conclusions: In this experimental model, the waxed paper applied locally effectively reduced epidural fibrosis, completely avoided dural adherence, and induced no side effects.

Late Pennsylvanian cyclothems are documented from the carbonate platform margin in Guizhou, South China, providing a unique opportunity to study glacio-eustatic fluctuations and their impact on reef development. This paper focuses on a shallow-water, reef-bearing succession and a deep-water succession in the Houchang area of Guizhou. Fourteen microfacies, grouped into seven associations, represent distinct depositional environments.

Though scientific consensus regarding HIV causation of AIDS was reached decades ago, denial of this conclusion remains. The popularity of such denial has waxed and waned over the years, ebbing as evidence supporting HIV causation mounted, building again as the internet facilitated connection between denial groups and the general public, and waning following media attention to the death of a prominent denier and her child and data showing the cost of human life in South Africa. Decades removed from these phenomena, HIV denial is experiencing another resurgence, coupled to mounting distrust of public health, pharmaceutical companies, and mainstream medicine.

Controlling Listeria in produce packinghouses can be challenging due to the large number of potential contamination routes. For example, repeated isolation of the same Listeria subtype in a packinghouse could indicate persistence in the packinghouse or reintroduction of the same Listeria from an upstream source. To improve understanding of Listeria transmission patterns in packinghouses, we performed a longitudinal study in four apple packinghouses, including testing of 1,339 environmental sponges and whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based characterization of 280 isolates.

Objectives: This preliminary study aimed to clinically assess the precision of a novel optical jaw tracking system (JTS) in registering mandibular movements (MMs) of protrusion and mediotrusion.
Methods: Twenty healthy participants underwent recordings using Cyclops JTS (Itaka Way Med) for functional MMs of protrusion and laterotrusion by two trained clinicians. Each subject performed five registrations at different times according to a standardized pattern within one-month period.
