In this study, the behavior of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) from municipal solid waste (MSW) in the leachate and refuse of two simulated landfill bioreactors was compared. In one reactor, the leachate was circulated between a landfill and a methanogenic reactor, while the other reactor was operated using direct recirculation of the leachate. The results revealed that the original concentration of DBP in the refuse was approximately 18.5 microg/g, and that this concentration decreased greatly during decomposition of the waste for both reactors. Furthermore, the major loss of DBP from the landfill occurred in an active methanogenic environment in the later period, while the environment was acidic due to a high concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and contained a large volume of biologically degradable material (BDM) during the early stage. Circulating the leachate between the landfill and a methanogenic reactor resulted in an increase in the biodegradability of MSW and a high degree of waste stabilization. Furthermore, DBP degraded more rapidly in the landfill that was operated in conjunction with the methanogenic reactor when compared to the landfill in which there was direct leachate recirculation.

The biomethanization of lignocellulosic wastes remains an inefficient and complex process due to lignin structures that hinder the hydrolysis step, therefore, some treatments are required. This work describes the addition of an enriched microbial consortium in the biomethanization of rice straw. The experiment was carried out in lab batch reactors following two strategies: (i) pretreatment of rice straw for 48 h using the enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100), and (ii) addition of this enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100) directly to the anaerobic reactors (bioaugmentation).

Despite advances in anaerobic digestion (AD), full-scale implementation faces significant challenges, particularly during the start-up phase, where inoculum selection is crucial. This study examines the impact of inoculum choice on the operational and economic performance of thermophilic digesters during the start-up phase. Methanogenic reactors R3 and R4 were inoculated with digested sludge (DiS) and diluted sewage sludge (DSS), respectively, and fed with hydrolyzed source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) and thickened sewage sludge, which were processed in R1 and R2, serving as acidogenic reactors.

The archaeal class is widely and abundantly distributed in anoxic habitats. Metagenomic studies have suggested that they are mixotrophic, capable of CO fixation and heterotrophic growth, and involved in acetogenesis and lignin degradation. We analyzed 35 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), including the first complete circularized MAG (cMAG) of the Bathy-6 subgroup, from the metagenomes of three full-scale pulp and paper mill anaerobic digesters and three laboratory methanogenic enrichment cultures maintained on pre-treated poplar.

In soil polluted with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), oxygen is rapidly depleted by aerobic respiration, creating a redox gradient across the plume. Under anaerobic conditions, BTEX biodegradation is then coupled with fermentation and methanogenesis. This study aimed to characterize this multi-step process, focusing on the interactions and functional roles of key microbial groups involved.

Bioelectrochemically improved anaerobic digestion (AD-BES) represents an upgrading strategy for existing biogas plants, consisting of the integration of bioelectrodes within the AD reactor. For this study, a series of laboratory-scale AD-BES reactors were operated, valorising agricultural digestates through the production of biogas. The reactors were inoculated and started-up with three different digestates, leading to significant differences in the microbial community developed on the bioelectrodes.
