By analyzing the propagating behavior of the supermodes in a coupled-waveguide system, we have derived a universal criterion for designing adiabatic mode transformers. The criterion relates epsilon, the fraction of power scattered into the unwanted mode, to waveguide design parameters and gives the shortest possible length of an adiabatic mode transformer, which is approximately 2/piepsilon1/2 times the distance of maximal power transfer between the waveguides. The results from numerical calculations based on a transfer-matrix formalism support this theory very well.

We analyze the internal conversion dynamics within the and excited states of both bare and functionalized porphyrins, which are known to exhibit significantly different time constants experimentally. Through the integration of two complementary approaches, static calculation of per-mode reorganization energies and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, we achieve a comprehensive understanding of the factors determining the different behavior of the two molecules. We identify the key normal and essential modes responsible for the population transfer between excited states and discuss the efficacy of different statistical and nonstatistical analyses in providing a full physics-based description of the phenomenon.

However, existing inverse design tools based on finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) models are poorly suited for optimizing waveguide modes for adiabatic transformation or perturbative coupling, which lies at the heart of many important photonic devices. Among these, dispersion engineering of optical waveguides is especially challenging in ultrafast and nonlinear optical applications involving broad optical bandwidths and frequency-dependent anisotropic dielectric material response.

This article addresses the stability of a nonlinear electron plasma wave (EPW) against the growth of longitudinal sidebands. The electron distribution function consistent with the EPW is assumed to only depend on the dynamical action. Consequently, the EPW is either stationary (a so-called Berstein-Greene-Kruskal mode) or varies very slowly in space and time (a so-called adiabatic wave).

As the key component in on-chip mode-division multiplexing systems, a compact silicon photonic-lantern mode (de)multiplexer is proposed and demonstrated using the shallow-etched tilt slot waveguide. The proposed six-mode (de)multiplexer is designed as a constant coupling length of 11.7 µm for each mode conversion and eliminates the adiabatic transition tapers for cascaded asymmetric directional couplers, which have an ultra-short total length of 69 µm.
