Systematic analysis of read-across adaptations in testing proposal evaluations by the European Chemicals Agency.

ALTEX

Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA.

An essential aspect of the EU's "Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals" (REACH) regulation is the European Chemicals Agency's (ECHA) evaluation of testing proposals submitted by registrants to address data gaps. Registrants may propose adaptations, such as read-across, to waive standard testing; however, it is widely believed that ECHA often finds justifications for read-across hypotheses inadequate. From 2008 to August 2023, 2,630 testing proposals were submitted to ECHA; of these, 1,538 had published decisions that were systematically evaluated in this study.

INSPIRE (Integrated short-term palliative rehabilitation to improve quality of life and equitable care access in incurable cancer) is a large European-funded project that aims to promote quality of life through a novel rehabilitation model for people disabled by advanced cancer.

Despite the presence of various guidelines, diagnosing malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) continues to pose challenges. Furthermore, although endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) offers high-resolution images, it has not yet recognized as the primary tool for malignancy diagnosis. The study objective was to develop a simplified and user-friendly scoring system to improve the diagnostic accuracy of malignant IPMNs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography) and EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) in children with chronic and acute recurrent pancreatitis, analyzing data from 2008 to 2022.
  • A total of 222 ERCP procedures were conducted, showing high technical success (98%), significant improvements in stricture resolution (63%), and a low adverse event rate (3.6%), along with substantial pain relief for 76% of patients.
  • Additionally, 54 EUS procedures highlighted low complication rates (2.4%), confirming that both ERCP and EUS are safe and beneficial for paediatric patients, mirroring findings in adults.
