Nitropolychlorobutadienes are valuable precursors for highly functionalized acyclic or (hetero)cyclic compounds. In this 8th part of our synthetically oriented series we focus on the application of these versatile starting materials in the synthesis of analogs of the heterocyclic insecticides imidacloprid and thiacloprid, and the acyclic counterpart clothianidin. In addition to the main synthetic part, leading to imidazolidines or oxazolidines, further promising types of compounds derived by subsequent chemical modifications, are introduced. Most of the new compounds show high insecticidal activity.
The presence of polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), which are emerging as dioxin-like contaminants, in remote polar regions has not been reported. This study investigated 11 target PHCZs (ΣPHCZs) and 25 unknown PHCZs (ΣUNPs) in soil and sediment samples collected from Ny-Ålesund in the Arctic. Industrial emissions have been identified as significant contributors to polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), a novel pollutant in the environment. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitously present in food and environmental samples. Accompanied by similar compounds like halogenated natural products (HNPs), their regular monitoring in fish and their predators is an important task. While different procedures have been developed, the removal of the lipid matrix, mainly carried out by treatment with sulfuric acid or by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), is an indispensable step during sample preparation.
Drinking water halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) have become an increasing health concern. However, the endocrine-disrupting effects of DBPs have not been well evaluated, and the limited available data have inhibited a comprehensive understanding of their health risks.
