Susceptible dairy cattle were immunized with attenuated, live calf-derived, in vitro-cultured or biologically cloned Babesia bovis, with non-viable exoantigens, or with recombinant rhoptry-associated protein 1 (rRAP1). Antibody response assessed by the indirect fluorescent assay (IFA) and by the growth inhibition activity in vitro showed that seroconversion correlated with neutralization activity in vitro in all immunized groups, but not with protective immunity in vivo. The protective responses elicited by immunization with completely avirulent biologically cloned live parasites, or by the exoantigens were sufficient for highly susceptible dairy cattle, in which prime immunization with blood-derived attenuated parasites cause clinical babesiosis. Upon challenge with virulent live parasites all immunized calves were solidly protected, but only partial protective immunity was acquired by rRAP1 immunization.

A compact and easy-to-use high-bandwidth autobalanced detector for microscopy is presented, being able to remove up to 67 dB of correlated noise, thus, allowing for shot-noise limited image acquisition even in the presence of high laser excess noise. Detecting a 20 MHz modulation frequency at half the repetition rate of the driving pulsed laser, the autobalanced detector is able to exploit an extra +3 dB increase in signal-to-noise ratio due to the coherent addition of modulation sidebands in stimulated Raman scattering. Pixel-by-pixel noise canceling and correction of sample transmission losses are possible for pixel scan rates of more than 1.

RNA-seq technology has been widely used for the characterization of the transcriptome profile induced by several diseases in both humans and animals. In the present study, RNA-seq was used to identify the differential expression of genes associated with the immune response in cattle infected with two different strains of , both derived from the same Mexican field isolate, which exhibit distinct phenotypic characteristics: the virulent strain, capable of producing acute clinical signs, and the attenuated strain, capable of stimulating a protective immune response when used as an immunogen with an efficacy greater than 80%. The differential gene expression analysis performed revealed a total of 620 differentially expressed genes (DEGs).

Purpose: Since extract of the laminated layer (LL) from E. granulosus showed immuno-modulatory effects in vitro and in vivo, we sought to determine its effect on the onset, development, and evolution of experimental auto-immune uveitis (EAU). The latter is a model of some human diseases with ocular inflammation that can cause blindness.

Layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) are attractive cathode candidates for rechargeable secondary batteries because of their high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, LTMOs suffer from severe capacity attenuation, voltage decay, and sluggish kinetics, resulting from irreversible lattice oxygen evolution and unstable cathode-electrolyte interface. Besides, LTMOs accumulate surface residual alkali species, like hydroxides and carbonates, during synthesis, limiting their practical application.
