Published: February 2009

A twin-tapered bi-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivative (BOXD-T8) showed a monomeric feature and intramolecular charge transition at concentrations lower than 10(-5) mol/L. BOXD-T8 molecules self-assembled to nanoparticles and further to helical nanofibers with blue fluorescence emission in DMSO, while nanoribbons resulted in an emission-enhanced gel in ethanol. The strong fluorescent emissions of BOXD-T8 in an isolated state in apolar solvents were attributed to the coplanar conformation of the rigid backbone and the strong fluorescent emissions of BOXD-T8 in the aggregation states were attributed to the coplanar conformation of the rigid backbone and J aggregation.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-based nanoprobes are promising candidates as bioimaging agents, yet the fine-tuning of their photophysical properties through the modulation of the surrounding matrices remains largely unexplored. Herein, we report the development of polypeptide-TADF nanoprobes, where the rigid, α-helical polypeptide scaffold plays a critical role in enhancing the emission intensity and lifetime of the TADF fluorophore for bioimaging. The α-helical scaffolds not only spatially separated TADF molecules to avoid self-quenching but also anchored the dyes with minimized rotation and vibration.

Chiral Mesostructured Yb, Er Codoped CeO with Upconverted Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

School of Chemical Science and Engineering, Tongji University, 1239 Siping Road, Shanghai, 200092, China.

Upconverted circularly polarized luminescence (UC-CPL) active organic and organic-inorganic composite materials have garnered increasing attention due to their vast potential applications in areas such as 3D displays, encryptions, spintronics and optoelectronic devices. However, effective methods for fabricating chiral inorganic materials exhibiting UC-CPL remain a challenge. Herein, we propose an approach for the synthesis of UC-CPL active chiral mesostructured CeO powders (CMCs) via a hydrothermal growth method, using L/D-aspartic acid as symmetry-breaking and structure-directing agents.

With the development of nanotechnology, there is growing interest in using nanoparticles (NPs) for biomedical applications, such as diagnostics, drug delivery, imaging, and nanomedicine. The protein's structural stability plays a pivotal role in its functionality, and any alteration in this structure can have significant implications, including disease progression. Herein, we performed a combined experimental and computational study of the effect of gold NPs with a diameter of 5 nm (5 nm Au-NPs) on the structural stability of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein in the absence and presence of NaCl salt.

Intrinsic Chirality Modulation and Biosensing Application of Helical Gold Nanorods by Anisotropic Etching.

The investigation of plasmonic chirality is a profound and intriguing topic, and the distinctive morphology of intrinsically chiral nanoparticles has prompted significant interest in the structure-activity relationship between particle morphology and chirality. In this work, the anisotropic etching of chiral helical gold nanorods (HGNRs) by a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-HAuCl complex was observed with an interesting bidirectional variation of intrinsic chirality that initially enhanced and subsequently weakened, which was related with the diversity in CTAB distribution. In addition, an ultrasensitive and convenient sensing platform for acetylcholinesterase was developed based on the circular dichroism signal recovery of HGNRs caused by the dual inhibition of HGNR etching.

In nature, organisms living in extreme environmental conditions produce antifreeze proteins (AFPs) that prevent the growth of ice crystals and depress the freezing point of body fluids. In this study, three different peptides derived from the N-terminal sequence of the helical type I AFP HPLC6, along with a stapled derivative produced via on-resin microwave-assisted copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition, were conjugated to gold nanoparticles. The aim of decorating the surface of the nanoparticles with multiple copies of the peptides was to combine the ice-binding capability of the peptides with the size of a nanoparticle, thus, mimicking the protein bulkiness to enhance the peptide antifreeze activity.
