This chapter summarizes the construction principles, operation, and calibration of (single-fiber) fluorescence-based fiber optic sensors. These sensors transduce recognition of a chemical analyte by a transducer such as a protein molecule as a change in fluorescence wavelength or lifetime that can be measured remotely through a length of fiber optic. Examples are given of determination of metal ions in aqueous solution by fluorescence ratio and lifetime. Included are descriptions of instruments, alignment procedures, identification of noise sources, use of calibration standards, factors in the use of long fibers for sensing, issues in field and shipboard operation, and probe preparation.

This study experimentally investigates the role of cavitation-induced shock waves in initiating and destabilizing capillary (surface) waves on a droplet surface, preceding atomization. Acoustic emissions and interfacial wave dynamics were simultaneously monitored in droplets of different liquids (water, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol), using a calibrated fiber-optic hydrophone and high-speed imaging. Spectral analysis of the hydrophone data revealed distinct subharmonic frequency peaks in the acoustic spectrum correlated with the wavelength of capillary waves, which were optically captured during the onset of atomization from the repetitive imploding bubbles.

COVID-19 infection has been linked to ocular involvement, particularly retinal microvascular changes. Additionally, prolonged hypoxemia may affect retinal sublayers located within the retinal watershed zone. The aim of this study was to evaluate retinal and optic nerve OCT parameters in patients with COVID-19 illness of varying severity and compare them with controls.

Photonics offers a promising platform for quantum computing, owing to the availability of chip integration for mass-manufacturable modules, fibre optics for networking and room-temperature operation of most components. However, experimental demonstrations are needed of complete integrated systems comprising all basic functionalities for universal and fault-tolerant operation. Here we construct a (sub-performant) scale model of a quantum computer using 35 photonic chips to demonstrate its functionality and feasibility.

Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling has been an acceptable step in vitrectomy surgeries for various retinal diseases such as macular hole, chronic macular edema following epiretinal membrane (ERM), and vitreoretinal traction. Despite all the benefits, this procedure has some side effects, which may lead to structural damage and functional vision loss. Light and dye toxicity may induce reversible and irreversible retina damage, which will be observed in postoperative optical coherence tomography scans.

Introduction: Little is known about the day-to-day variability of different skin microcirculation parameters, and how this variability is influenced by age and sex. The aim was to examine the day-to-day variability of microcirculatory parameters in relation to age and sex.
Methods: The cutaneous microcirculation was measured using a fiber optic probe integrating laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to measure oxygen saturation, red blood cell (RBC) tissue fraction, speed-resolved and conventional perfusion.
