The Integrating Waveguide Biosensor was developed for rapid and sensitive detection of bacterial cells, spores, and toxins. A sandwich format of immunoassay was employed using Salmonella as model. The analyte was immunocaptured on the inner surface of the waveguide and then detected by the antibody conjugated with fluorescent dye. The waveguide was illuminated by an excitation light at a 90 degrees angle. The emitted light from fluorescent labels on the surface of the waveguide was efficiently collected and channeled to a detector at the end of the waveguide, while minimizing interference from the excitation light. Utilizing fluorescent dye Cy5, a 635-nm diode laser for excitation, and a photomultiplier tube detector, the Integrating Waveguide Sensor System was able to detect approximately ten captured cells of Salmonella.

Ligand binding to membrane proteins initiates numerous therapeutic processes. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), a popular method for analyzing molecular interactions, has emerged as a promising tool for in situ determination of membrane protein binding kinetics owing to its label-free detection, high surface sensitivity, and resistance to intracellular interference. However, the excitation of SPR relies on noble metal films, typically gold, which are biologically incompatible and can cause fluorescence quenching.

The frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technology combined with optical phased array (OPA) is promising for the all-solid-state light detection and ranging (LiDAR). We propose and experimentally demonstrate a silicon integrated OPA combined with an optical frequency microcomb for parallel LiDAR system. For realizing the parallel wavelengths emission consistent with Rayleigh criterion, the wide waveguide beyond single mode region combined with the bound state in the continuum (BIC) effect is harnessed to obtain an ultra-long optical grating antenna array.

With the rapid advancement of information technology, the data demands in transmission rates, processing speed, and storage capacity have been increasing significantly. However, silicon electro-optic modulators, characterized by their weak electro-optic effect, struggle to balance modulation efficiency and bandwidth. To overcome this limitation, we propose an electro-optic modulator based on an all-fiber micro-ring resonator and a p-Si/n-ITO heterojunction, achieving high modulation efficiency and large bandwidth.

To enhance the end-face coupling efficiency of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) chips, in conjunction with current device fabrication processes, a stepped spot size converter (SSC) based on a special outer envelope profile has been proposed and investigated. This stepped SSC can reduce the coupling loss between the LNOI waveguide and a normal single-mode optical fiber. First, the output waveguide of a mode converter was proposed and simulated, in which the mode field had the biggest overlapping integral factor with a single-mode fiber (MDF ≈ 9.

This paper presents a novel approach to fabricate substrate integrated waveguides (SIWs) on glass substrates with tin (Sn) through glass vias (TGVs) tailored for millimeter-wave applications. The fabrication process employs a custom-designed vacuum suctioning system to rapidly fill precise TGV holes in the glass substrate, which are formed by wafer-level glass reflow micromachining techniques with molten tin in a minute. This method offers a very fast and cost-effective alternative for complete via filling without voids compared to the conventional metallization techniques such as electroplating or sputtering.
