AI Article Synopsis

  • 239 colorectal cancer patients underwent surgery and were given 5'-DFUR for either 1 year or 3 years, with a follow-up of at least five years.
  • Survival rates were high for both groups, with the 3-year group showing slightly better results (92% vs. 91.4% at 5 years), although no significant difference was found statistically.
  • The treatment was generally safe, with low rates of adverse effects (14.8% for the 1-year group and 19.5% for the 3-year group), indicating that 5'-DFUR is effective and safe for improving patient prognosis in colorectal cancer.

Article Abstract

Methods: Subjects were 239 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent curative resection surgery from December 1994 to March 1997(Stage I-III b). The patients were given 5'-DFUR for postoperative 10 months as scheduled. They had been allocated into either a 1-year group or a 3-year group by dynamic randomization. 5'-DFUR was administered by an intermittent regimen such as 1,200 mg/body/day for five days followed by two days rest. All patients were followed for five years at least.

Results: 239 patients were enrolled in the study. Favorable prognoses in both groups were observed. Although no statistically significant differences in overall survival curves of full analysis set based on the drug administration durations, were detected(log-rank test, p=0.734), a better prognosis was found in the 3-year group(5-year OS: 92.0%; 1- year group, 91.4%; 3-year group). Adverse drug reactions resulted in low rates such as 14.8% in the 1-year group and 19.5% in the 3-year group. Grade 3 was found in either group.

Conclusions: Due to a result in the present study that 5-year survival rates in both groups were far higher than anticipated, we could not finally clarify the optimal administration duration of 5'-DFUR. However, the results of the present study indicate that 5'-DFUR results in a good prognosis for colorectal cancer patients and is safe over a long / administration period.

A 3-year-old boy presented with an unusual combination of indurated skin, sclerotic plaques with lichenification, and yellowish papules. Histopathology revealed diffuse dermal mucin deposits, and laboratory tests showed a positive throat culture for Group A streptococcus and elevated serum anti-streptolysin titers. An 10-day course of oral amoxicillin was associated with near-complete resolution of all dermatological findings within 4 months.

Identifying outcomes that matter most is key in driving specialized paediatric burn care. The aim of this study was to discover the most important outcomes for paediatric burns. Parents of children (0-3 year and 4-11 years old) and adolescents (12-17 yearss old) completed surveys to identify outcomes that matter most in the short-term (<6 months postburn) and long-term (6-24 months postburn).

: The World Health Organisation (WHO) included silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for the management of early childhood caries. SDF is typically available as a 38% aqueous solution, which is watery to apply. A 38% SDF gel has recently been developed, but its caries-arrest effectiveness remains unsubstantiated.

Unlabelled: The field of competitive swimming lacks broadly applicable predictive models for talent identification across various age groups of adolescent swimmers. This study aimed to construct a predictive model for athletic talent using machine learning methods based on anthropometric and physiological data. Baseline data were collected from 5444 participants aged 10-18 in Shanghai, China, between 2015 and 2018, with 4969 completing a 3-year follow-up.

Introduction: As China is scaling up tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in its national programmes, the objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and performance of 6-month regimen of isoniazid monotherapy (6H) in terms of preventive therapy acceptance, adherence, effectiveness and outcomes in minority areas with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.

Method: A prospective observational cohort study was initiated among 461 PLHIV in Butuo County after ruling out active TB (ATB) and followed up for up to 3 years to collect incidence events in real-world settings. TB incidence and protective rates were calculated.
