We developed a new sampling system, the Nano Catcher, for measuring the surface chemical structure of polymers or industrial products and we evaluated the performance of the system. The system can directly pick up surface species whose depth is on the order of approximately 100 nm and can easily provide a sample for a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) system without the necessity of passing it over to a measurement plate. The FT-IR reflection data obtained from the Nano Catcher were compared with those obtained using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) method and sampling by hand. Chemical structural analysis of a depth region from a few tens of nanometers to a few hundred nanometers can be directly performed using this system. Such depths are beyond the scope of conventional X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ATR methods. We can expect the use of the Nano Catcher system to lead to a great improvement in the detection of signals of surface species in these depth regions.

Water Catchers within Sub-Nano Channels Promote Step-by-Step Zinc-Ion Dehydration Enable Highly Efficient Aqueous Zinc-Metal Batteries.

Zinc metal suffers from violent and long-lasting water-induced side reactions and uncontrollable dendritic Zn growth, which seriously reduce the coulombic efficiency (CE) and lifespan of aqueous zinc-metal batteries (AZMBs). To suppress the corresponding harmful effects of the highly active water, a stable zirconium-based metal-organic framework with water catchers decorated inside its sub-nano channels is used to protect Zn-metal. Water catchers within narrow channels can constantly trap water molecules from the solvated Zn-ions and facilitate step-by-step desolvation/dehydration, thereby promoting the formation of an aggregative electrolyte configuration, which consequently eliminates water-induced corrosion and side reactions.

Developing a new strategy to retain phosphoric acid (PA) to improve the performance and durability of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) remains a challenge. Here, a strategy for ion-restricted catcher microstructure that incorporates PA-doped multi-quaternized poly(fluorene alkylene-co-biphenyl alkylene) (PFBA) bearing confined nanochannels is reported. Dynamic analysis reveals strong interaction between side chains and PA molecules, confirming that the microstructure can improve PA retention.

The cancer-immune cycle conceptualized the mechanisms of driving T cell responses to tumors, but w as limited by immunological ignorance elicited by tumor inherent immunoediting, which failed to initiate and maintain adaptive immunity. Targeting specific vulnerabilities of cell death patterns may provide unique opportunities to boost T cell antitumor immunological effects. Here an ultrasound nanomedicine-triggered tumor immuno-reediting therapeutic strategy using nano/genetically engineered extracellular vesicles, which can induce tumor highly immunogenic PANoptosis and iteratively start-up the energization of cancer innate immunity cycle by repeatedly liberating damage-associated molecular patterns, thereby priming sufficient antigen-specific T cells and shaping protective immune response through activating cGAS-STING signaling pathways, is reported.

High-Flux Neutron Generator Based on Laser-Driven Collisionless Shock Acceleration.

A novel compact high-flux neutron generator with a pitcher-catcher configuration based on laser-driven collisionless shock acceleration (CSA) is proposed and experimentally verified. Different from those that previously relied on target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA), CSA in nature favors not only acceleration of deuterons (instead of hydrogen contaminants) but also increasing of the number of deuterons in the high-energy range, therefore having great advantages for production of high-flux neutron source. The proof-of-principle experiment has observed a typical CSA plateau feature from 2 to 6 MeV in deuteron energy spectrum and measured a forward neutron flux with yield 6.

Malaria Biomimetic for Tumor Targeted Drug Delivery.

ACS Nano

July 2023

Centre for Medical Parasitology at Department for Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, 2200 Copenhagen, Denmark.

Malaria infected erythrocytes utilize the parasite protein VAR2CSA to bind to a unique presentation of chondroitin sulfate (CS) for their placenta specific tropism. Interestingly, many cancers express a similar form of CS, thereby termed oncofetal CS (ofCS). The distinctive tropism of malaria infected erythrocytes and the identification of oncofetal CS, therefore, represent potentially potent tools for cancer targeting.
