Eye, head, and body movement are intimately linked. During self-motion, the eyes track objects by a combination of vestibular reflexes and smooth pursuit eye movements but although the world appears stable during saccadic gaze changes, it does not appear stable during physical self-motion. We determined the amount by which a fixated object needed to be moved in space in order to appear earth stationary to a linearly moving observer. Observers were oscillated sinusoidally either passively or under their own control, under lit and fully darkened conditions. The visual targets always needed to move (in space) in the same direction as the observer to be judged as earth stationary. Targets needed to be moved more in order to be judged as earth stationary when movement was in the dark, rather than in the light, and also when movement was passive rather than when it was active. Efference copy motor signals, visual movement, and non-visual cues all contribute significantly and approximately additively to the estimate of self-motion. Errors in perceived self-motion can produce subsequent illusory visual motion.

Future climate projections are expected to have a substantial impact on boreal lake circulation regimes. Understanding lake sensitivity to warmer climates is therefore critical for mitigating potential ecological and societal impacts. The Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM; ca 7-5 ka BP) provides a valuable analogue to investigate lake responses to warmer climates devoid of major anthropogenic influences.

Building a Better All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Battery with Halide Solid-State Electrolyte.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Tianjin Key Lab for Rare Earth Materials and Applications, Center for Rare Earth and Inorganic Functional Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, National Institute for Advanced Materials, Nankai University, Tianjin, 300350, P. R. China.

Since the electrochemical potential of lithium metal was systematically elaborated and measured in the early 19th century, lithium-ion batteries with liquid organic electrolyte have been a key energy storage device and successfully commercialized at the end of the 20th century. Although lithium-ion battery technology has progressed enormously in recent years, it still suffers from two core issues, intrinsic safety hazard and low energy density. Within approaches to address the core challenges, the development of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) based on halide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has displayed potential for application in stationary energy storage devices and may eventually become an essential component of a future smart grid.

A brief introduction to the diffusion Monte Carlo method and the fixed-node approximation.

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods represent a powerful family of computational techniques for tackling complex quantum many-body problems and performing calculations of stationary state properties. QMC is among the most accurate and powerful approaches to the study of electronic structure, but its application is often hindered by a steep learning curve; hence it is rarely addressed in undergraduate and postgraduate classes. This tutorial is a step toward filling this gap.

Understanding the interaction between multiphase flow and reactive transport in porous media is critical for many environmental and industrial applications. When a nonwetting immiscible phase is present within the pore space, it can remain immobile, which we call unsaturated flow, or move, resulting in multiphase flow. Previous studies under unsaturated flow conditions have shown that, for a given flow rate, the product of a mixing-driven reaction increases as wetting phase saturation decreases.

This study demonstrates a rich complexity of the time-frequency ionospheric signal spectrum, dependent on the measurement type and platform. Different phenomena contributing to satellite-derived and ground-derived geophysical data that only selected signal bands can be potentially sensitive to seismicity over time, and they are applicable in lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling (LAIC) studies. In this study, satellite-derived and ground-derived ionospheric observations are filtered by a Fourier-based band-pass filter, and an experimental selection of potentially sensitive frequency bands has been carried out.
