l-theanine: From tea leaf to trending supplement - does the science match the hype for brain health and relaxation?

Nutr Res

January 2025

Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Padova, Padova, Italy; IMDEA-Food, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

l-Theanine is a unique non-protein amino acid found abundantly in tea leaves. Interest in its potential use as a dietary supplement has surged recently, especially claims related to promoting relaxation and cognitive enhancement. This review surveys the chemistry, metabolism, and purported biological activities of l-theanine.

As a potential alternative to next-generation LIBs, carbonous materials have garnered significant attention as anode materials for potassium-ion batteries due to their low cost and environmental friendliness. However, carbonaceous materials cannot fulfill the demand of anode for PIBs, due to volume expansion and poor stability during charging/discharging process. It is well-known that N doping can provide active sites for K-storage, and expand the layer distance between graphite layers.

Tumor Microenvironment-Driven Structural Transformation of Vanadium-Based MXenzymes to Amplify Oxidative Stress for Multimodal Tumor Therapy.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials, College of Biomedical Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610064, China.

MXenzymes, a promising class of catalytic therapeutic material, offer great potential for tumor treatment, but they encounter significant obstacles due to suboptimal catalytic efficiency and kinetics in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, this study draws inspiration from the electronic structure of transition metal vanadium, proposing the leverage of TME specific-features to induce structural transformations in sheet-like vanadium carbide MXenzymes (TVMz). These transformations trigger cascading catalytic reactions that amplify oxidative stress, thereby significantly enhancing multimodal tumor therapy.

In the prevailing medical pluralism of contemporary society, alternative and complementary medicine occupy a relevant place, comprising a heterogeneous group of practices with different values depending on tradition and social acceptance. Their scarce regulation and growing use, facilitated by promotion through social networks and distrust of the dominant biomedical model, have generated interest among medical organizations and health authorities in their use and consequences. Appreciations vary from outright rejection to interest in its adoption by public health systems as part of their services.

Unlabelled: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) experience difficulties in self-management. One of the variables involved is the low level of health literacy (HL) which corresponds to the degree to which people access, understand, evaluate and use information to engage with health demands in different contexts, in order to promote and maintain good health.

Hypothesis: People diagnosed with diabetes mellitus who participate in an intervention to increase their level of health literacy improve their metabolic compensation measured in HBA1c.
