Understanding the integrity of well-bore systems that are lined with Portland-based cements is critical to the successful storage of sequestered CO2 in gas and oil reservoirs. As a first step, we investigate reaction rates and mechanistic pathways for cement mineral growth in the absence of CO2 by coupling water chemistry with XRD and NMR spectroscopic data. We find that semi-crystalline calcium (alumino-)silicate hydrate (Al-CSH) forms as a precursor solid to the cement mineral tobermorite. Rate constants for tobermorite growth were found to be k = 0.6 (+/- 0.1) x 10(-5) s(-1) for a solution:solid of 10:1 and 1.6 (+/- 0.8) x 10(-4) s(-1) for a solution:solid of 5:1 (batch mode; T = 150 degrees C). This data indicates that reaction rates for tobermorite growth are faster when the solution volume is reduced by half, suggesting that rates are dependent on solution saturation and that the Gibbs free energy is the reaction driver. However, calculated solution saturation indexes for Al-CSH and tobermorite differ by less than one log unit, which is within the measured uncertainty. Based on this data, we consider both heterogeneous nucleation as the thermodynamic driver and internal restructuring as possible mechanistic pathways for growth. We also use NMR spectroscopy to characterize the site symmetry and bonding environment of Al and Si in a reacted tobermorite sample. We find two [4]Al coordination structures at delta iso = 59.9 ppm and 66.3 ppm with quadrupolar product parameters (PQ) of 0.21 MHz and 0.10 MHz (+/- 0.08) from 27Al 3Q-MAS NMR and speculate on the Al occupancy of framework sites by probing the protonation environment of Al metal centers using 27Al{1H}CP-MAS NMR.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are known to be good MRI contrasts, but they have a high tendency to aggregate and their biocompatibility is limited. Hyaluronic acid is highly biocompatible, can provide SPION with colloidal stability, and interacts specifically with tumor cells through the CD44 receptor; therefore, it was used as a stabilizing layer. We successfully obtained SPION coated with hyaluronic acid and further functionalized it with folic acid to construct a dual-targeted system.

Antimicrobial biodegradable packaging films from phosphorylated starch: A sustainable solution for plastic waste.

Institute of Integrated & Honors Studies, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, 136119, Haryana, India. Electronic address:

This study focused on developing biodegradable packaging films based on starch as an alternative to non-biodegradable such as petroleum-derived synthetic polymers. To improve its physicochemical properties, potato starch was chemically modified through phosphorylation. Starch phosphorylation was carried out using cyclic 1,3-propanediol phosphoryl chloride (CPPC), produced phosphorylated starch (PS), and analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

Heteroleptic An (An = U, Np) chlorido-ketoenaminate complexes of the type [AnCl(TFB-BuA)(THF)] ( type: , ; TFB-BuA = 4-(-butylamino)-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-one) and the homoleptic Np heteroarylalkenolate complexes [Np(PyTFP)] (, PyTFP = 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-3,3,3-trifluoroprop-1-en-2-ol) and [Np(DMOTFP)] (, DMOTFP = 1-(4,5-dimethyloxazol-2-yl)-3,3,3-trifluoroprop-1-en-2-ol) were synthesized and characterized (SC-XRD, NMR, Vis-NIR, MS). While their solid-state structures compare well to those of their uranium analogues, the behavior in solution showed significant differences. The binding motif of the DMOTFP ligand in complex can change to form two different complex isomers, as seen by paramagnetic chemical shifts in NMR experiments.

This research focuses on the selective detection of Hg2+ ions using hybrid nanosensors composed of rhodamine building blocks linked to polyamine units of varying chain lengths to produce Rho1-Rho4, which were subsequently conjugated with thioctic acid (RT1-RT4) and attached to the surface of gold nanoparticles to create hybrid nanosensors (GRT1-GRT4) designed for detecting heavy metals. The chemical structures, purity, morphology, and chemical composition were characterized through XRD, NMR, TEM, ATR-FTIR, and mass spectrometry. These hybrid nanosensors demonstrated excellent selectivity and sensitivity in colorimetric and fluorescence responses towards Hg2+, outperforming other metal ions.

This study explored a facile method for converting macadamia nutshells into bio-based nanomaterials, including cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), through deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment coupled with a nanofabrication strategy. Comparisons of the physicochemical, morphological, and structural properties of the CNF and LNPs produced through acidic choline chloride/oxalic acid dihydrate (ACDES) and alkaline KCO/glycerol DES (ALDES) pretreatments were conducted using SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, GPC and 2D NMR. The CNFs obtained from ACDES pretreatment (ACCNFs) exhibited uniform and long filament-like structures with shorter whisker-like nanocrystals.
