[Topical issues of children's pulmonology in Russia].

Vestn Ross Akad Med Nauk

Published: February 2009

Recent data illustrating the situation in children's pulmonology in this country are presented. Its main features are the high prevalence of acute and chronic lung diseases in children and the enhanced frequency of allergic pulmonary disorders, in the first place bronchial asthma. National guidelines on various aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases in children need to be developed. Also important are their further in-depth studies. Training of specialists in children's pulmonoloy in conformity with the relevant international standards is considered to be a priority area of activity.

Background: Ventricular tachycardia (VT) substrate characteristics before transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR) in repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF) are unknown.

Objectives: In this study, the authors sought to evaluate substrates for sustained monomorphic VT before TPVR in rTOF.

Methods: Retrospective (2017 to 2021) and prospective (commencing 2021) rTOF patients with native right ventricular outflow tract referred for electrophysiology study (EPS) before TPVR were included.

Towards healthy sleep environments: Ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM and its implications in children's sleep health.

Environ Res

January 2025

Department of Civil, Environmental, & Architectural Engineering, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA, United States. Electronic address:

The growing impact of climate change and escalating wildfire seasons has led to heightened ambient air pollution, potentially affecting children's sleep health. However, current epidemiological research often relies on outdoor weather data to model the environmental impacts on sleep health, potentially mischaracterizing the actual bedroom environment. To address these challenges, we conducted experiments to investigate the relationships among ambient, indoor, and personal exposure to PM concentrations and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children.

Lung Clearance Index: A Sensitive Measure of Airway Function Improvement in Adolescents After Weight Loss from Bariatric Surgery.

Respir Med

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel; Clalit Health Services, Dan Petah Tikva District, Petah Tikva, Israel. Electronic address:

Background: Morbid obesity in adolescents impacts respiratory function, often leading to reduced lung volume and obstructive ventilatory defects. However, standard spirometric values frequently remain within normal ranges.

Objectives: We hypothesized that Lung Clearance Index (LCI) is a more sensitive marker for detecting airway dysfunction in adolescents with morbid obesity than conventional lung function tests.

Longitudinal single-cell profiles of lung regeneration after viral infection reveal persistent injury-associated cell states.

Electronic address:

Functional regeneration of the lung's gas exchange surface following injury requires the coordination of a complex series of cell behaviors within the alveolar niche. Using single-cell transcriptomics combined with lineage tracing of proliferating progenitors, we examined mouse lung regeneration after influenza injury, demonstrating an asynchronously phased response across different cellular compartments. This longitudinal atlas of injury responses has produced a catalog of transient and persistent transcriptional alterations in cells as they transit across axes of differentiation.

Sleep and breathing in children with Joubert syndrome and a review of other rare congenital hindbrain malformations.

Ther Adv Respir Dis

January 2025

Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle Children's Hospital, 4800 Sand Point Way NE, OC 7.730, Seattle, WA 98105, USA.

Background: Joubert syndrome (JS) is an autosomal recessive disorder with a distinctive mid-hindbrain malformation known as the "molar tooth sign" which involves the breathing control center and its connections with other structures. Literature has reported significant respiratory abnormalities which included hyperpnea interspersed with apneic episodes during wakefulness. Larger-scale studies looking at polysomnographic findings or subjective reports of sleep problems in this population have not yet been published.
