Macular and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in strabismus and anisometropic amblyopia.

Published: January 2009

Electrophysiological studies investigating the relationship between amblyopia and retinal function have in the past produced conflicting findings, leaving the retinal correlates of amblyopia, if they exist, unknown. Recent advances in technology, and in particular the emergence of optical coherence tomography, has resulted in further investigations of the retinal nerve fibre layer and macula of amblyopia patients using these instruments. This review summarises the recent literature in this area and discusses various issues relating to this research.

Early ultrastructural damage in retina and optic nerve following intraocular pressure elevation.

Vision Res

January 2025

Instituto de Biofísica Carlos Chagas Filho, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a significant risk factor for glaucoma, causing structural and functional damage to the eye. Increased IOP compromises the metabolic and structural integrity of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons, leading to progressive degeneration and influencing the ocular immune response. This study investigated early cellular and molecular changes in the retina and optic nerve (ON) following ocular hypertension (OHT).

A 73-year-old male with a history of incidentally diagnosed Paget disease of bone affecting the skull and left orbit 2 years prior presented with 3 months of vision loss, proptosis, and periorbital swelling of the OS. Examination showed best-corrected Snellen visual acuity of 20/150 in the affected eye, intact motility, 7 mm of relative proptosis, significant dilated and tortuous "corkscrew" conjunctival vessels, serous choroidal and retinal detachments, optic nerve hyperemia, and venous tortuosity and dilation. Although the bony lesions in the left orbit were stable from 1 year prior on imaging, the diagnostic angiogram demonstrated osseous blush and hypervascularity of the lesion.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation on anterior chamber angle parameters and posterior segment structures in highly myopic eyes and explore potential correlations between these changes. The study aimed to assess alterations in superficial and deep vessel density (SVD, DVD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness to clarify the safety profile of ICL implantation.

Methods: Prospective observational study, included 36 highly myopic eyes undergoing ICL implantation in surgery group and 23 non-surgical control eyes in non-surgery group.

Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) due to trabecular meshwork (TM) dysfunction, leading to neurodegeneration, is the pathological hallmark of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Impaired axonal transport is an early and critical feature of glaucomatous neurodegeneration. However, a robust mouse model that accurately replicates these human POAG features has been lacking.

Chagas disease (CD), a parasitic infection, may have ocular repercussions in its cardiologic form, since a history of heart disease of other etiologies already has been established as a risk factor for neuropathies and maculopathies. The aim of the present study was to investigate preclinical structural and vascular optic nerve head (ONH) and macular parameters in patients with chronic CD. Nineteen patients with CD and 19 healthy subjects were evaluated with optical coherence tomography, optical coherence tomography angiography, and Laguna ONhE® software.
