We aimed to determine patient characteristics, treatment challenges, and adherence outcomes according to orphanhood status in a prospective cohort of 101 HIV+ children in rural Uganda. Orphans were older at antiretroviral initiation (P = 0.0008) and more likely to be WHO stage-4 (P = 0.03) than nonorphans. More attention to improving access to antiretrovirals in pediatric populations, especially orphans, is needed.

The evaluation of data regarding rehabilitation practices provides reference values for comparison purposes among different rehabilitation centers to critically review protocols and efficiently improve each center. The aim of the present work was to present the main causes of admission to Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center for each taxonomic group, to determine the admission factors that influenced the release and mortality, and to determine the predictive factors of release and mortality of wildlife. To this end, a retrospective study was carried out based on 5785 admissions registered in the database of Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in Costa Rica in 2020 and 2021.

Background: Population-level estimates of linkage to HIV care among children and adolescents (CAs) can facilitate progress toward 95-95-95 goals.

Setting: This study was conducted in Bunyala, Chulaimbo, and Teso North subcounties, Western Kenya.

Methods: Linkage to care was defined among CAs diagnosed with HIV through Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH)'s home-based counseling and testing initiative (HBCT) by merging HBCT and AMPATH Medical Record System data.

HIV infection has multi-system adverse effects in children, including on the growing skeleton. We aimed to determine the association between chronic HIV infection and bone architecture (density, size, strength) in peripubertal children. We conducted a cross-sectional study of children aged 8 to 16 years with HIV (CWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and children without HIV (CWOH) recruited from schools and frequency-matched for age strata and sex.

Coping strategies and mental health of adolescents impacted by parental HIV and AIDS in rural South Africa.

J Child Adolesc Ment Health

June 2022

Lefika Orphaned and Vulnerable Children Programme, Pretoria, South Africa.

The study explored whether orphanhood status as well as coping strategies predicted mental health outcomes in orphans and vulnerable adolescents who participated in an NGO-supported programme in rural South Africa. Participants comprised 175 adolescents (aged 11-18 years) from a low-resource community, and included non-orphans ( = 57), orphans due to AIDS ( = 62) and orphans due to other causes ( = 56). All participants rated themselves on the age-appropriate Youth Self-Report scales and 95 completed the Children's Coping Strategies Checklist (CCSC).

Background: In the 6 months following our estimates from March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021, the proliferation of new coronavirus variants, updated mortality data, and disparities in vaccine access increased the amount of children experiencing COVID-19-associated orphanhood. To inform responses, we aimed to model the increases in numbers of children affected by COVID-19-associated orphanhood and caregiver death, as well as the cumulative orphanhood age-group distribution and circumstance (maternal or paternal orphanhood).

Methods: We used updated excess mortality and fertility data to model increases in minimum estimates of COVID-19-associated orphanhood and caregiver deaths from our original study period of March 1, 2020-April 30, 2021, to include the new period of May 1-Oct 31, 2021, for 21 countries.
