The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate demineralization around restorations. Class V preparations were made on the buccal and lingual surfaces of each tooth. TPH (Group 1), Fuji II LC (Group 2), Tetric (Group 3), Dyract (Group 4), GS 80 (Group 5) and Chelon Fil (Group 6) were randomly placed in equal numbers of teeth. The teeth were submitted to a pH-cycling model associated with a thermocycling model. Sections were made and the specimens were examined for the presence of demineralization under polarized light microscopy. Demineralization was significantly reduced with Chelon Fil (Group 6). Furthermore, a similar inhibitory effect on the development of demineralization was observed in Groups 2, 4 and 5.

Analysis of surface roughness of glass-ionomer cements and compomer.

J Oral Rehabil

July 2003

Department of Surgery and Integrated Clinic, School of Dentistry of Araçatuba - UNESP, Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of two glass-ionomer cements (Vitremer and Chelon-Fil), and one compomer (Dyract) when submitted to different finishing/polishing procedures at different times. A hundred 80-sample discs were made of each material and randomly divided into six finishing/polishing groups: mylar strip (control); Sof-Lex discs; diamond burs; diamond burs/Sof-Lex discs; 30-fluted carbide bur; 30-fluted carbide bur/Sof-Lex discs. These procedures were carried out immediately after preparation of the samples, after 24 and 168 h.

The effects of mouthrinses on microhardness and colour stability of aesthetic restorative materials.

J Oral Rehabil

September 2002

Department of Oral Diagnosis & Radiology, Ege University, School of Dentistry, Izmir, Turkey.

Detrimental effects exerted on oral and dental tissues by frequent mouthrinse use are observed, but studies about their effects on aesthetic restorative materials are limited. In this study, the purpose was to examine the effects of three proprietary mouthrinses on three different aesthetic restorative materials. Mouthrinses were used as treatment groups, while distilled water served as the control.

Infrared spectrometric study of acid-degradable glasses.

J Dent Res

August 2002

Department of Dental Materials Science, Institute for Biomedical Technologies (IBITECH), Ghent University, De Pintelaan 185 (P8), B-9000 Ghent, Belgium.

The composition of glasses used in glass-ionomer cements affects their leaching behavior and hence the properties of the cement. The aim of this study was to correlate the composition and leaching behavior of these glasses with their infrared absorption characteristics. The wavenumber of the absorption band of the Si-O asymmetric stretching vibration shifts to a higher value with decreasing content of mono- and bivalent cations in the glass.
