Published: December 2008

Automated precision measurement setups for electrical resistivity of eight metallic samples simultaneously and thermoelectric power of different types of samples in the temperature range of 5-325 K have been developed. The details of the setups and their capabilities have been described. Usually each run takes nearly 5 h and typical error is within 3% and 4%, respectively. The results of high purity Nb and Pt samples are used as examples to demonstrate this.

Understanding and modeling of gas puff injection for diagnostic purposes.

Rev Sci Instrum

This article presents an experimental setup capable of providing high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of neutral gas puff injection using a glow discharge to excite the neutral gas and an ultra-high-speed camera to record the emitted light. Using the proposed setup, the shape and propagation velocity of a thermal deuterium gas puff at 1 bar have been measured. The cloud has a conical shape and a propagation velocity of vprop = 1870 ± 270 m/s.

Due to the growing interest in X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI), the development of XPCI simulators has become an active field of research. Efficient computer simulations are a prime tool for optimizing the XPCI setup and acquisition process. In addition to phase contrast, modern XPCI setups provide insight into the unresolvable sample micro structure distribution through the dark field signal.

Ultrashort pulse sources are complex and resource-intensive. To reduce overhead and simplify operations, we had previously developed a method to deliver ultra-short pulses through fiber-optic links to multiple locations and to characterize them remotely using a compact detector module. We created a pulse pair with varying delays at the central location using a pulse shaper before launching them into the fiber links and measured the first and second-order autocorrelations at the satellite location.

Underwater optical imaging, especially in coastal waters, suffers from reduced spatial resolution and contrast by forward scattered light. With the increased number of hyper- and multi-spectral imaging applications, the effect of the point spread function (PSF) at different spectral bands becomes increasingly more relevant. In this work, extensive laboratory measurements of the PSF at 450, 500, 550, 600 and 650 nm in different turbidity have been carried out.

We present a new methodology for measuring the gain and the linewidth enhancement factor of a semiconductor ridge-waveguide laser structure. The holographic methodology is based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Compared with existing methods, the holographic setup allows to measure intensity and phase related properties such as optical gain and linewidth enhancement factor spectrally and spatially resolved.
