Biomimetic bone cartilage scaffolds based on trilayer methacrylated hydroxyapatite/GelMA composites for full-thickness osteochondral regeneration.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Since cartilage injury is often accompanied by subchondral bone damage, conventional single-phase materials cannot accurately simulate the osteochondral structure or repair osteochondral injury. In this work, a gradient gelatin-methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel scaffold was constructed by a layer-by-layer stacking method to realize full-thickness regeneration of cartilage, calcified cartilage and subchondral bone. Of note, to surmount the inadequate mechanical property of GelMA hydrogel, nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) was incorporated and further functionalized with hydroxyethyl methacrylate (nHA-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, nHAMA) to enhance the interfacial adhesion with the hydrogel, resulting in better mechanical strength akin to human bone.

Exploiting supramolecular secondary building units (SSBUs) for developing porous crystalline materials represents an exciting breakthrough that extends the boundaries of reticular chemistry. However, shaping polynuclear clusters sustained by non-covalent interactions for the assembly of hydrogen-bonded frameworks remains a critical challenge. This study presents a novel strategy to stabilize SSBUs by tuning the π-stacking geometry of conjugated building blocks, facilitating the creation of hydrogen-bonded frameworks with tailored architectures for demanding gas separation.

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) membranes, with advantageous features of versatile chemistry and structures, are driving the development of advanced nanofiltration (NF) membranes with exceptional performance. While developing a printing method holds great promise for the eventual mass production of these membranes, reports on the printing method and the underlying mechanisms of membrane formation are currently scarce. Herein, we develop an aerosol-assisted printing (AAP) system for fabricating PEM NF membranes with highly tunable separation characteristics.

Integrating Enzymes with Reticular Frameworks To Govern Biocatalysis.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Sun Yat-Sen University, School of Chemistry, 135 Xingang West, 510275, Guangzhou, CHINA.

Integrating enzymes with reticular frameworks offers promising avenues for access to functionally tailorable biocatalysis. This Minireview explores recent advances in enzyme-reticular frameworks hybrid biocomposites, focusing on the utilization of porous reticular frameworks, including metal-organic frameworks, covalent-organic frameworks, and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, to regulate the reactivity of an enzyme encapsulated inside mainly by pore infiltration and in situ encapsulation strategies. We highlight how pore engineering and host-guest interfacial interactions within reticular frameworks create tailored microenvironments that substantially impact the mass transfer and enzyme's conformation, leading to biocatalytic rate enhancement, or imparting enzyme with non-native biocatalytic functions including substrate-selectivity and new activity.
