Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cefovecin sodium in the treatment of cats with naturally occurring skin infections (abscesses and infected wounds).
Design: Multicenter (26 sites), randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial.
Animals: Client-owned cats of any breed with naturally occurring skin infections with associated clinical signs and confirmatory bacteriologic culture results.
Procedures: Cats with clinical signs of skin and soft tissue infection were randomly allocated to receive a single dose of cefovecin (8 mg/kg [3.6 mg/lb], SC) followed by placebo drops administered orally once daily for 14 days or 1 SC placebo injection followed by cefadroxil (22 mg/kg [10 mg/lb], PO, once daily for 14 days). Only one 14-day treatment course was permitted.
Results: Effectiveness of cefovecin in the treatment of cats with abscesses and infected wounds was similar to that of cefadroxil. At the final assessment on day 28, 97% (86/89) of cefovecin-treated cats and 91% (80/88) of cefadroxil-treated cats were considered treatment successes. There were no serious adverse events or deaths related to treatment.
Conclusions And Clinical Relevance: 1 SC injection of 8 mg of cefovecin/kg for the treatment of cats with naturally occurring skin infections (wounds and abscesses) was safe and as effective as cefadroxil administered orally at 22 mg/kg, once daily for 14 days.

Hypertension is a common condition in older cats, often secondary to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although the heart is one of the organs damaged by hypertension, the pathology of the feline hypertensive (HT) heart has been poorly studied. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the gross and microscopic pathology of hearts obtained from cats at post-mortem examination and to compare cats diagnosed with hypertension with cats of similar age and kidney function for which antihypertensive treatment was not deemed clinically necessary.

Objectives: To investigate the pathogenicity of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) to the cornea, FHV-1 strains isolated from feline eyes with dendritic ulcers were subjected to genomic analysis to determine whether FHV-1 vaccine strains are involved in the formation of dendritic ulcers.
Methods: All open reading frame (ORF) sequences of the three F2 strains (Virbac, Intervet and Merial) and the FHV-1 clinical isolates from cats registered in GenBank were compared to detect nucleotide variants unique to the F2 strains, with those nucleotides then being used for simple genotyping of the F2 strains. In all isolates from feline eyes with dendritic ulcers, the regions including nucleotide variants of the F2 strain were amplified with PCR and sequenced.

The aim of this study is to assess a pheromone complex-impregnated collar in the control of feline problem behaviors, and to assess the ease of use and tolerance of the collar compared with a regular collar. Six hundred and twenty-four cats from 459 households with one or more of four problem behaviors (problem urination, scratching, fear, or inter-cat conflict) were recruited to a 28-day study. Households were randomly assigned so that each cat received either a pheromone-impregnated polymer collar (containing 13% FELIWAY Optimum) or a control regular silicone collar.

Organoids are stem cell-derived three-dimensional tissue cultures composed of multiple cell types that recapitulate the morphology and functions of their in vivo counterparts. Organ-on-a-chip devices are tiny chips with interconnected wells and channels designed using a perfusion system and microfluidics to precisely mimic the in vivo physiology and mechanical forces experienced by cells in the body. These techniques have recently been used to reproduce the structure and function of organs in vitro and are expected to be promising alternatives for animal experiments in the future.
