Laptop programs for students.

Published: January 2009

With the continuing decline in costs of technology, programs are proliferating worldwide to put networked laptop computers into the hands of millions of students on a routine basis. The reasons policy-makers support these programs are based on economic arguments, equity concerns, and widespread interest in education reform. Studies of laptop programs in schools report that they increase students' engagement in school, improve technology skills, and have positive effects on students' writing. However, evidence of the effectiveness of large-scale laptop programs in other learning domains is scarce. Research in many nations suggests that laptop programs will be most successful as part of balanced, comprehensive initiatives that address changes in education goals, curricula, teacher training, and assessment.

Aims/hypothesis: The organisation and cellular architecture of islets of Langerhans are critical to the physiological regulation of hormone secretion but it is debated whether human islets adhere to the characteristic mantle-core (M-C) structure seen in rodents. It is also unclear whether inherent architectural changes contribute to islet dysfunction in type 1 diabetes, aside from the loss of beta cells. Therefore, we have exploited advances in immunostaining, spatial biology and machine learning to undertake a detailed, systematic analysis of adult human islet architecture in health and type 1 diabetes, by a quantitative analysis of a dataset of >250,000 endocrine cells in >3500 islets from ten individuals.

Introduction: Surgeons commonly use cross sectional images to plan and prepare for surgical procedures. However, cognitively translating 2D images to surgical settings can be difficult and lead to sub-optimal resections. Lymph node dissection can be challenging due to the inability to locate small metastatic lesions, and their proximity to at-risk organ(s).
