Transverse-coherence properties of the free-electron-laser FLASH at DESY.

Published: December 2008

A general theoretical approach based on the decomposition of statistical fields into a sum of independently propagating transverse modes was used for the analysis of the coherence properties of the new free-electron laser source FLASH operated at 13.7 nm wavelength. The analysis shows that several transverse modes are contributing to the total radiation field of FLASH. The results of theoretical calculations are compared with measurements using Young's double-slit experiment. The coherence lengths in the horizontal and in the vertical directions 20 m downstream from the source are estimated at 300 and 250 microm, respectively.

The ever-growing interest in MXenes has been driven by their distinct electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. In this context, further revealing their physicochemical attributes remains the key frontier of MXene materials. Herein, we report the anisotropic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) features in TiCT MXene as well as site-selective photocatalysis enabled by the photophysical anisotropy.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated how high-intensity laser pulses propagate through a plasma channel by adjusting its length, successfully guiding 500 terawatt pulses over distances of 30 cm in hydrogen plasma.
  • They observed the initial energy transfer involving higher-order modes and a transition to more efficient propagation, noting a depletion of laser energy that generates wakefields.
  • Utilizing 21.3 joules of laser energy for localized electron injection, they achieved electron bunches with nearly monenergetic peaks reaching 9.2 GeV and total charge exceeding 10 GeV.

This item from the News and Views (N&V) category aims to provide a summary of theoretical and experimental results recently published in ref. , which demonstrates the creation of corner modes in nonlinear optical waveguides of the higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) type. Actually, these are second-order HOTIs, in which the transverse dimension of the topologically protected edge modes is smaller than the bulk dimension (it is 2, in the case of optical waveguide) by 2, implying zero dimension of the protected modes, which are actually realized as corner or defect ones.

We treat edge-mode resonance that may exist at boundaries of transversely finite beams illuminating a photonic lattice. The lattice is in the dark state signifying a perfect bound state in the continuum (BIC). The dark state is non-radiative in symmetric systems because lateral waves cannot couple to the lattice due to destructive interference between counter-propagating waves.

Dipole toroidal modes appear in many fields of physics. In nuclei, such a mode was predicted more than 50 years ago, but clear experimental evidence was lacking so far. Using a combination of high-resolution inelastic scattering experiments with photons, electrons, and protons, we identify for the first time candidates for toroidal dipole excitations in the nucleus ^{58}Ni and demonstrate that transverse electron scattering form factors represent a relevant experimental observable to prove their nature.
